SMC: Sooke Mountain Chopper

Fantastic!!! Is the handle polished, smooth or bead blasted?? If it's not bead-blasted I'd recommend trying that to see if it gives you the grippiness you're after before putting tape on the handle. I have two knives, both w the same G11, one smooth one beadblasted & the beadblasted is subtly yet quite a lot more secure in the hand w/out creating any hotspots.

It yours and I love to see it getting used but that looks so nice ... Let us know & keep chopping!!

I stuck a little grip tape on the handle and she's ready to rock and roll!

Hopefully I'll get a chance to get into the woods this weekend...

Not bad... :)

I've used that grip tape on the front strap of many pistols I've had...

Let us know how that works out and if it causes any hot-spots on your hand.

progress report:
3 hour off-trail exploration report December...uh, well, it was Sunday. I can't keep track of dates too!:D

The only time this knife left my hand during my first recon since I got it was when it was replaced at the top of the mountain by a beer. My hand became more accustomed with the grip and I have to say that they got along rather well:).

During that time it hacked Scotch Broom, slashed salal, sliced salmon berry and chopped fir. I didn't dig up mines or deanimate sentries, so if that's what you're into, look elsewhere!

The SMC is not simply a brutish tool, it is also a precision instrument with an amazing amount of point control. There is much to be said about the range of uses and the efficiency with which it commands the tasks given it.

When it bites deep into heavy wood in a hefty chop, it doesn't stick but removes huge chips instead. When it cleanly slices through a brittle limb, it sings a metallic song. Zzzing! Like a good axe. A stem of dry grass- tink- it leaves a perfect cut.

And after it all, in the quiet of the garage, you can hear the edge popping off the coarse hairs of my cro-magnon knuckles, even after hours of cold, wet trail clearing good times.

W2 doesn't stain much. Totally unlike my 1095 blades. I haven't cleaned it other than wiping it on my pants. No apparent staining yet at all. The edge, after all this, with a little edge maintenance is exactly as shaving sharp as the day I received it from Mr. Knight.

The grip tape helped immensely. And although I generally don't use a lanyard just in case I slip or trip and need to get the knife away from my body, it was very helpful when the chopping got burly.

The only changes I'd suggest for future iterations would be to leave more material at the butt of the handle to aid in retention under gnarly chopping as the knife gradually pulls out of your fist, leaving only the primary digits to maintain a strong, whipping grip. And also to add some texturing of some kind to aid in grip retention.

All in all, this is the best performing knife I have ever had the pleasure of using. I am very proud to be involved in its genesis.

Two:thumbup::thumbup:

I intend to be a repeat customer of Jason Knight's. He has what it takes- the eye, the personality, the dedication to quality and customer service but most importantly a concern with the actual performance of his blades through use.

Jason Knight is MY kind of knife maker.

I'm going to get a helmet camera so I can provide graphic insight in the future.

Good writing, Lorien! Does it sounds like a poem to SMC, or it just me? :)
Can't wait to receive my "Sooke Mountain" from Jason Knight!

You too Mark? Mine should be mailed Wednesday.!! Can't wait!:thumbup:

Yes, me too! :) I don't know yet when I will get it, but talked to Jason Knight a couple of weeks ago, and he told me that I am in:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::D

For Jason and All,

Just wondering what adds up to the scary sharpness? Blade geometry? or how the final edge is applied?

Any and all comments appreciated.

you guys are gonna love this knife!

The edge is not fat, but there is enough material to support it in its work, and just by running ceramics along the edge and using the knife, I can tell you that it is just right with regards to hardness. Not too hard to sharpen, not to soft to need to very often:thumbup::cool:

And I believe that the SMC is differentially hardened.

When you're really hacking away with it, there doesn't seem to be a lot of shock getting transferred to the hand. Not sure why that is, but I like it:).

just happened to bring the camera on today's trail recon:)

Lorien alot of people would have put that knife up even though it is one of Jason's user pieces. Glad you did not

Great Knife and I am glad you are enjoying it.

Man all these pictures are just killin' me... I can't wait until mine arrives.

So the grip tape is for the fingers? I would have thought it would be on the palm side...

Thanks Joe.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I still have not taken that Primos out. :o It's just so pretty...

Thank you again, Jason Knight. The Force is strong in you:thumbup:.

My SMC is here!

I asked for a couple changes, first to add a little length as I prefer longer knives for bushwhacking and that the pins be hollow for a forward lanyard. Other than that the rest was all Jason. I was a little shocked when I opened it as it's very close to the design I was going to use for my next knife. (kinda freaky close )

I only have this one pic for now but I will get out and use it tomorrow and take a few more.
Man this thing just looks and feels mean! I just know this is going to chop through whatever it hits effortlessly.
