Does anybody know anything about this knife? How durable is it? How would it fare as a combat/defensive blade?

I believe there are a few different knives in that series, which one are you referring to?

What's the maximum you're willing to spend? This will help us make suggestions.

Sorry, it's the Smith and Wesson homeland security survival fixed blade tanto. Here is the links:

8" blade version

(( deal spotting ))

5.5" blade version

If you can tell us what a "combat/defensive blade" means to you, maybe we can help you better.

What do you expect to do with a "combat/defensive blade"?

I would go with something from Cold Steel before Smith & Wesson

(( deal spotting: not a paid BF dealer ))

S&W knives don't have a good reputation on this forum. You can find a better blade for the $. Tell us your price range and any limits on blade length (if any) and you'll get better responses.

EDIT: Look at Becker or Ranger knives but not from the sf.com website you linked, the prices stink there. A Becker Companion should run around $60, looks like they might be full MSRP prics.

Get a cold steel instead. Or a Nim tanto from BM with aluminum handle and I think 154cm? can't remember the steel.

My main requirements for a knife are as follows:

1. Blade between 5.5 and 9 inches.

2. Mole compatable.

3. Sheath has retention without the strap ( I dont care if it has a strap or not, but the sheath has to be able to hold the knife from any position, even upside down, withought a strap).

4. Below a $100 preferably

5. Has to be good for combat/defense as well as some utility/survival situations.

I want to clarrify that I am NOT special forces, nor am I infantry. I just want a knife that I can count on if I get deployed and the crap hits the fan.

I have a schrade schf3 extreme survival that I think would do fine, but the sheath doesn't fit the bill by a long shot.

Thanks, but not getting what you mean by "Has to be good for combat/defense as well as some utility/survival situations."

Are you talking knife fighting in while serving in the military? Or do you want a self-defense knife? Or do you want a tool that someone in the militray would use day to day?

Honestly, that S&W Homeland Security thing is a "fantasy" knife. Pure silliness.

ESEE-6 fits your needs but runs about $130. Finding a knife that fits your needs isn't hard, Becker, Ranger, etc all make nice blades for $70ish +/-. The problem is finding a kydex sheath that comes with the blade that meets your requirements in your budget. Most blades come with some type of nylon sheath with a strap/snap of some kind. You could always buy a knife and try to find someone on the forum to make you a kydex sheath, but I don't know what those would run.

Look at ESEE knives, they come with kydex/mole sheaths.

Knives: I like Becker, Kabar, and Ranger knives (personal exp with those 3).

Search for kydex makers here on the forum. Tell them what ya need and they can give ya a price estimate.

Good luck

The stock sheath that comes with the BK2 has retention out the rear and will easily hold the knife in place without the strap. Not sure about molle compatibility though. Over in the BK&T forum one of our gents that served used his quite a lot over there, and it withstood everything he put it through (utility wise) and honestly, you would have to try pretty hard to break it.

What I mean by combat Is that if my weapon was somehow damaged and could no longer fire, I would still have a weapon to fall back on. I have looked at the Cold Steel G.I tanto but I don't know if it is a good knife, any info on that?

I have the 5.5 inch one in tiger camo. I think it would fare alright as a fighting knife, but that's about it. The tanto blade makes it unusable for survival/everyday use that a soldier might use it for. All the different knives listed above would fare way better for what you might use it for.

How about the Cold Steel G.I Tanto? How good is that knife? I have decided to change my requirements , I no longer need it to be a survival knife, only a knife that will be good for combat situations. I can always carry my leatherman or swiss army knife for those purposes.

I dont own one, but for the price I think it will be alot better of a product, I have never seen the sheath for it tho

Gerber LMF2 has a molle sheath with great retention. Its in your price range.

It's excellent for the price.
