Smith &Wesson Knives

.
There are only a handful of major factories in China (and around the world for that matter) and they produce all the different brands we see. It's quite possible that a more recognized brand like Benchmade has knives made in the same factory that produces M-Tech.
.

you are incorrect.. ther eis around 600 knife factories in china making kitchen knvies pocket knvies and "hunting" knives,,, ive never seen a chinese factory which makes the whole knives... or sheaths or sucyh,, normaly thye buy each componenet and the only produce the stamped metal parts and the blade gerinding...

the bone handles are made by specific firms making normaly cheap bone decorations and such,, the sheaths by hand bay produers and wallet producers (hence the bad quality)
ther eis several large factoriwes in china that specilise in sheath production about 4 or 5.. they can produce a decent sheath,,

no knife factories produce a compleat knife.
ther eis several "famous brands" in china that own knif efactories they produce kitchen knive sin the traditional chinese style.. nothing more..

i think personaly ive seen some 100s of factories and i kknow in yaingjiang ther eis around 350 or more... in shenzen about 30-50 and in sveral other cities there is quite afew.. shezen is normaly table cutlery,, yaingjiang normaly cheap folding knvies , multi toold ,ect ect.

First time in general discussion and I feel the need to participate.

Everyone is capable of making good knives that's for sure but one thing to note. Please understand I'm inconstruction industry and I'm giving rough rates.

Chinese worker has a daily wage of approx 5 bucks (high salary for factory worker) , an American worker has a daily wage of approx (Please roughly fill in what you know, I'll use 15 bucks for now). This is a reason for china's strength (as well as 1/3 earth's population! Approx of course).

Assuming a daily pay of 10 bucks (average) the chinese worker is one happy bunny and will churn out better quality and higher volume (from my experience though in construction field) and the American worker will (assuming he does not quit) unfortunately suffer and his work with him.

Cost of living and a variety of issues, if i'm not entirely correct please forgive me, just my 1+1 cents.

By the way, from my experience purchasing machine components, it's not the supplier/manufacturers fault, the customers set the specifications and the ISO ensures the following of specs. They (chinese) realize within china there is mucho competition so they are afraid to offend the customer and always there are daggers waiting to stab them in their shadows... just waiting for their chance.

By the way, I'm a chinese living in Malaysia but I deal internationally.

I have a few. I keep them in my turnout gear. Great, cheap, reliable blades that I'm not worried if I lose in a fire.

I'd buy S&W well before Gerber.

try $15 an hour in construction. Give or take.

 OMG! No wonder the stuff is soooooo cheap coming from China!!! And they (china) have no pesky unions or medical to consider too. Any wonder.

But, if looking at producing extraordinary products I will not credit China. China (and India for example) simply made it cheaper and mass produced. The genius, the drive to improve, to invent and dare I say dream came elsewhere. If buyers willing to pay a little (not verified, maybe a lot!) more for a US made product (americans help america) instead of cheap cheap cheap, maybe there is not so bleak a future :)

FYI, I'm a Chinese who insists on buying German and American (not limited to 2) products as a matter of principle and I'm willing (though in financial pain) to pay more! If this continues (China mass produce issue) then the development of new products and/or advancements in technology will be certain to suffer.

Enough of my blah blah blah, keep up the good work and don't lose hope.:thumbup:

I bought 2 S&W knives about 6 or 7 years ago, cost around $20.00, they both fell apart in about a year or so. So now I stick to Kershaw mostly or the occasional Spiderco or Benchmade. most of my knives cost under $50.00 except the Griptilian . All are quality knives and wont fall apart in a few years. And if they do have a problem all these company's have a good warranty policy and great customer service. I have personal experience with Kershaw, they gave me a new knife when I broke the tip. You get what you pay for. !

I like to buy AMERICAN when I can.

China has shown us that they don't care (or somebody doesn't) about quality with the whole lead in our kids toys issue, and other recalls that we see on the news every day! On the other hand some products that come out of China are good. Auto parts are a good example for the most part. Maybe Americans are supervising. Or I'd like to think there some Chinese companys that care about their work their and products.

S&W knives are junk. But, if you want to waste your money on them, that is up to you.

Just managed to sneak a SW Power Glide knife and I've been using for a few days. In my honest opinion it ain't bad. Edge's still ok after opening lots of boxes and test cutting old boxes.

I only have two gripes though,
1. I prefer double edge cause I don't always know where the sharp edge is. Potentially problematic if in a 'situation'.

2. IMO SW should make these with two pieces of aluminium instead of 4 for grips. Bending or machining a C shaped piece instead of attaching two pieces together (currently 2 piece per handle). Because it's done like so, it may not be ideal for strength.

I for one am willing to give SW another try, just ordered two boot and neck knives in EBAY. We'll see.
