I decided to start a new thread about small mills. I found a smithy small mill/lathe combo on CraigsList. Does anyone know anything about these units? I know they have been around for a long time and some people told me they are good quality but they have never used one. What are the things I should look for when I go see it tomorrow or Sunday? Any help would be appreciated. BTW, I don't know anything about milling but it should be fun to learn.

Tim,

I have one and use it mostly to slot guards. I got it cheap at an auction.
Before I got it I would go to a friends shop and use his bridgport. I was disappointed. But it works for my limited use and skill.
I'm not sorry I bought it.

Tim there are a number of things that one should look at when buying a used lathe/mill. The first is see if the owner can turn it on and show you some of the operations, like engaging the feed for the carriage, changing the speeds...ect. look it over good and check to make sure all the operations work smoothly, both powered and manually, look at the ways and make sure they are not worn. If I were you I would do a search on some of the machinist forums, they are some good folks and will be glad to answer your questions...
