Well, the new smithy is up and running !! I sure am glad to have the forge and cutting torch out of the basement !! This started out as a 12 X 12 cover-it building but the top was destroyed by snow and wind over the winter. I just screwed some left over decking from work on the sides and roof, built a back wall and added a header and 2 posts up front. The floor is 2 1/2 tons of 3/4" stone.. To appease the wife I painted it to match the house..It is quite sturdy and if I don't get too cluttered it should be big enough..As of now I only have the forge, torches, anvil, post vice,cutting/welding table, welding machine, angle grinder and the chop saw in there..BTW the shop dogs approve of it as well..

Hey I'm not gaining that much weight !!!!!!!!!!!!! Any way I still have the 1000 sq/ft grinding/finishing shop in the basement where I keep the KMG ,buffers, sanders, wire feed welder, leather shop,etc..etc..:D

OH!!! Then I will give you 1 1/2 years to out grow it. HEHEHEHEHE!!!

Hey Louis,it looks great-nice job:thumbup:  -and now you don't have to worry about launching your house on to your neighbors':D

The tong/hammer holder is just a board that I drilled holes in every 2" and glued 5" long dowels in..

Yep, The forge is homemade and reaches 2400 + with the help from the wifes blowdryer !! (she was a little mad about that ):D

Wow! That's a really nice example of how to build a smithy and not have to sink tons of dough into it! Nice job!

Louis how tall are you? I noticed that your anvil is like 2' off the ground. I have my hunk or iron 32" off the ground. I havent used it yet so I dont know if I have mine to tall. I am 5'6" and it seems any lower and I would be hunched over.

rule of thumb is that when you are standing next to your anvil with your arm by your side, make a fist and your anvil should not be taller than your fist itself. you should be able to rest your fist on the face of your anvil without bending your arm or anything.

louis, looks great to me. wheres the sign that says beware of shop dogs? or one that says no trespassing, violaters will be shot, survivors will be forced to eat IG's HTing relish!!!! :D

Looks great, I don't know if I'd get anything done there, it looks like a nice place to sit, have a beer and relax.

Thanks PimpinSquee I had heard that before, but wasn't sure if I really heard that or was making it up in my head.

The anvil is at 30" which is ideal for me at 5'7". It may be an optical illusion that makes it look lower but remember that this is a 278 pound anvil so it is fairly tall.
Yeah it is a nice place to relax and have a few beers :D :D
I still need to make a silhouette (that was hard to spell:D ) of an anvil or a bowie knife to hang over the entrance..
I don't need no stinkin sign to keep people out, I have my abrasive personality and a 2 strand electric fence all around my property......(The fence is really to keep the dogs in...and boy does it work..they won't get within 10 feet of that sucker !!!)

That's a fine lookin smithy you have there:thumbup: Good for you:thumbup:

That looks great Louis! Bet ya it's not the last smithy we see built on one of those frames.:D
Whens the hammer-in?;)
Mace

Looks nice Louis ! Like Mace said, when's the HI? =D (Of course I'm one to talk, almost done setting up my workshop with multiple forges and anvils etc, perfect for several people to work at once, and I havent thought about an HI either, all I'd have to do is get a few more propane tanks so everything could be run at once)
