On our way down to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg,Bryson City area I was able to stop in the Smokey Mountain Knife Works store. For the first time.
That store is amazing, packed full of everything you can imagine.
Didn’t spend alot of time there and didn’t buy anything but was still a nice experience. It was so packed you could barely move around at times and couldn’t get to see everything. I’m not a big crowd person, lol.

Yep, great knife shop. I've been there once while vacationing in the area.

My wife was in the store with me but we went our separate ways when we got inside. She attempted to surprise me with a knife that she bought while I wasn't around to see it. Her surprise was ruined when I made it to the checkout lane before she did.

They send your knife or knives up to the checkout and you pick them up there when you're ready to leave. They put your last name on them and when I went to pay for my one knife they handed me two knives. I knew right away what had happened.

Not a complaint. The store is awesome. Just a funny story that I always remember when I think about that trip.

Been there about 8 times despite not living anywhere near there. My question is, how did you not buy any knives??

Now that I think about it, last time I was there I didn't buy any-just to feel like I'm in control of the knife thing. Typically would set aside $600 for visiting that store. Even when I was a child in middle school, I saved up all year for the summers vacation to the area.

Just wasn’t looking to buy any knives and it was crowded. Only spent about 30 minutes looking around. Plus in the past month I probably spent over $800 on knives.

Never been in person but did order online recently. They automatically added insurance to my $119 order and charged me for it.
Isn't it their responsibility to cover me if it does not arrive.....not mine ?
Sort of turned me off on them.

Don’t know about insurance but they’re sales tax is outrageous down here. Anywhere from 9% to 10.25%, adds up fast. In Ohio it’s basically 7.25% everywhere.
Don’t know if they would charge tax with internet orders like some others do.

I've ordered with them a good few times. Mainly for traditionals. Great shop. I especially love when their new catalog comes in the mail. I hope one day I get to check out the actual store.

Interesting. Doesn't sound right to me either. Thanks for the heads up.

Are you sure it's insurance not in-state sales tax? Last time I ordered a ZT from SMKW I don't remember there was an insurance fee charged on me.

It said insurance for sure. I even backed up in the order process to see if I could unselect it somehow but no go. I had posted this somewhere before and someone else had the same experience.

I was using a discount code which then would not let me get free shipping and may have triggered the insurance charge too. Many discounts don't really turn out to be discounts in the end.

Tennessee doesn't have an income tax, so their sales tax is high in general.

I love going into SMKW. We've taken an annual trip to Cades Cove/Pigeon Forge since I was in elementary school (31 now), and stopping in SMKW has always been a highlight of the trip. It's incredible how much it's grown.

We stopped by on our way through the area last year. Definitely a big amusement park for knife enthusiasts. Staff seemed helpful and friendly. But I've got to add, there were several off-color things in the t-shirt and bumper sticker section that left a bad taste in our mouths. There are so many other great places to buy knives, I probably won't ever go back or order from them on line.

what is off color in ref to? meaning bad language and nudity type stuff or something else? thanks.

Homophobia. I'll be the first to say that sacred cow makes the best burgers, and I like blue humor even more than the next guy, but that attacks my friends. Enough said.

Well, technically no discount is an actual discount, since you have to spend money in order to get them, in essence ending up with less money than you had before! :D

gotcha. usually off color I think of what i said........ nudity, sexual crude jokes images, and bad language. homophobia/bigotry in general is far worse than off color, in my book. I'm in the deep south raised here round swamp people, rednecks galore and florida boys. even Im not a bigot. thanks for clarifying.

Glad we're on the same page. Apologies to all if I derailed the thread.
