My parent's circle of friends is reaching the end of their time here, and all have been given health problems and obstacles, as is normal for their age group. Gloria is a big old goofy girl, kind of a sweet good natured, kind person, not mean, caring in her way, and is now hooked up to a IV and down to 90 pounds. She can't get chemo for her cancer until she gains weight, and is not gaining weight on her IV. Typical of the medical profession, inspections of her electrolytes and status is monitored once a week, which will of course be too awkward and slow an inspection to correct the course should she take a downward spiral, as she apparently is. The Clan of the Bridge group- those persons connected through geography and work in the economic boom of Orange County in the 60's in Ca, the 'Bridge Group', of my parents social circle, recently met at Gloria's bedside to see her. My father is very unhappy with the state of affairs and thinks everyone is being too blase about the treatment regime. The medical profession should get off it's ass and monitor her status much more frequently.
I told him to pray. He is a member of that apriori cultural event facing us today- the secular new age view. No God. We just are the product of atoms and evolution and when we die it is as if we were never born. Any logical man knows this and the rest is superstition or willfull cowardice. Well, I see it different. It is a bloody miracle we are here in the first place. It is a miracle there is any 'here' to be in. To not believe is foolish and prideful in my humble opinion. But that's just me. These men and women of my parent's peer groups are professionals, smart, savy, and largely atheists. I'll pray for Gloria.
While I don't propose to guess which 'religion' is 'right', which current Christian interpretation is 'right', (and the interpretations change withe every generation- you notice that? If it is all Gospel, how is it the Word of the Lutherans is different today than what was thought 100 years ago? None get to the Father but through the Son does not mean I interpret how the Son gets to each of us. God does that; I don't tell you how God does that. Neither do I look around in my intellectual arrogance and pronounce it all dust and blood, bone and decay. )
So I pray for my Father's generation, who risked it all in WWll and to raise a new generation with their palms open, they who brought about the luxury of a new Secular stance on 'reality' as an improvement to the 'dogma' of religion.
Men live in the real world where their arms only reach so far, their feces reek and their needs plain to see. They're dreams are bigger than death and we are grateful to be part of the Infinite Play around us.
A prayer for Gloria who is kind.
