Smoke detector in shop?

Yesterday while doing some serious grinding I sent the smoke detector off twice :(. Not a huge deal, I just fanned the detector with a peice of paper and it stoped. So my question is do you guys keep a smoke detector in your in home shops? Also any advice on this would be very helpful. Thanks.

I use, but I learned that I was constantly setting it off while grinding. I have taken it down, and I make sure that if I have heavy grinding (the kind that is going to throw a lot of sparks and is likely to catch something on fire) I always do that right away when I get to the shop. I then spend time working on handles or other things that are not likely to start a fire. I hope that if a fire is going to start it is going to happen while I'm still there.

Same problem as having a smoke detector in the kitchen. A thermal detector will work better than either a photoelectric or ionization detector. The thermal detector should be set for 130 degrees.

The answer is a FIRE detector, AKA heat detector, thermal detector. It goes off at a pre-set temperature. Place it near where a fire would most likely start for the fastest response.

This might be really a silly fix(I admit, not a lot of thought went behind it) but I wired my home smoke detector to turn on when the lights get shut off. It gives a chirp when I shut down for the night.
