I recently got a ka-bar in a trade. its in great condition but the stacked leather handle and sheath have a noticible scent of cigarette smoke. it is strong enough to make your hands carry the scent after handling the knife ( how i first realized it). so, how can i get the smell out without any chemicals?... or damaging the leather of course. any information would be helpful. thanks alot!

It's not a guarantee, especially for year's long saturaton but Febreze is one known option to try with smoky smells in permiable materials upon which Febreze can be applied. It's a cheap option to try as well. Of course it will yield it's own oder, for a while anyway.

I'm a life long guitar player who owns and uses only vintage tube amps and many vintage amps are smoky smelling. Febreze has helped in that regard before and is a somewhat common option in the world of vintage tube amps.

It's worth looking into.

If the leather handle has been well oiled, the smoke is probably bonded to the oil. Try soaking the handle in unscented mineral oil (or whatever oil you use to preserve and water-proof leather). You may need to go through a few soakings to leach out the smell.

It's also possible the previous owner transferred the cigarette smell from his/her skin to the handle via their sweat. Murphy's Oil soap would clean the leather, but I would be concerned about moisture going in during the rinse off.

A soak in linseed oil should do the trick. Just make sure to squeeze out and wipe off the excess oil that ends up soaking into the leather. It'll be a little oily for a bit, but if you use it, that won't be a problem for long.

I've got a knife once in trade that smelled strongly of tobacco, but the smell was gone pretty fast and didn't take any special deodorizing. I can't imagine yours, (even with the leather handle) will hang in there too long if you leave it out in the open air.
