Smoke smell on a knife...how do i get it out?

spray the entire knife with a 20% solution of smokex made by Host Products. leave on the knife about 10 minutes then rinse & apply remoil to the total piece, wait 10 minutes & dry off.this is a great product that i remove fire & cigarette odors from homes & office structures with.
 
Just washing it in the sink with dish soap should take care of it, let it soak in the hot soapy water for awhile then rinse with very hot water than let air dry.

After it dries put it outside in the sun for awhile.
 
Take a fresh lime, give it a wipe down. Lemon is a great deodorant. I use it to take the smell of fish off my knives.
 
if it smells of smoke that bad, the former owner is a dead duck.....
 
+1 on thathomesite.com. I've used Febreze on a couple of things and it just replaces the odor that was there with a strong scent of perfume.
 
You could try covering it up with a strongly scented beeswax leather cream.

WD40 is great for cleaning smells like mould off of things but I doubt it would do the leather much good!

Febreeze is only a temporary solution it traps the smell in the fabric so it cant escape and cause the smell, but eventually it wears off.

I'd probably just use it like Jill Jackson and Bushman suggested...
 
Simple green may dry the leather out even further. That stuff is wicked on human skin. I'd try applying oil as other have mentioned. This is funny because all of my dad's knives that he has given to me smell of smoke. In my case I don't want to remove the odor since it's a part of those knives history.
 
Wrap the handle in 4 or 5 downy dryer sheets, let it sit in the sun all day, and then put your preservative of choice on the leather.

Works well for other leather items I have purchased off of Ebay and such.

Saddle soap and conditioner. Somebody already said that. You also might try calling a tack shop that sells saddlery supplies. If they can reccomend a product that will get horse smell out of leather, they should have some solution for you.
