Smoky mountain knifeworks rep weekend

Hey Everybody......

Great day yesterday........ It was not terribly crowded which meant I could take time and really talk knives....... Love it when there is a crowd but, I like to do more than just talk happy talk........ Had a nice talk with Frontiersman among others......Damn, I wish I was better at remembering names....... This is a real personality defect(I was missing the evening the Carnegie people taught that one).......
Had great ribs early with Rick Stafford the KaBar rep and decided to go back over to Smoky and just cruise ......had a really good time just looking at literally thousands of knives in the cases and also their incredible collection of antiques on the walls.....Kevin Pipes, the owner, Is a collectors collector.... Good time......

Any who I am looking forward to today....Gonna see some old friends and maybe, just maybe a new one....... Should be fun.......

Talking with good people about knives and getting a meal that has tasty ribs? I'd call that day a win.

i'll be the last guy on the planet to see a BK21. good thing i have a pre-order in ;)

Wife and I drove up from Atlanta - yeah, about 4 hours up and another 4 back. Plan was to let wife actually put her hands on a BK-16. Unfortunately none were there! Normally patient, but after that drive she wanted a knife. So we walked around looking and trying out patterns she wanted till she found 2 that she liked that fit her small hand and felt right. One was $150 and the other was $55.

I did get to do what I wanted: I met and chatted with Ethan Becker! Talked BK-2 and BK-10 and got to swing the BK-21. That is one sweet Kukri! And got to watch the man himself demonstrate it up close and personal. Mr. Becker, as my father used to say, is a scholar and a gentleman. It was a pleasure, genuine pleasure to meet him and talk knives for a few minutes. (But why did I not get a BKT sticker?)

Thanks for your time Mr. Becker. It surely made my day and the long drive worth it.

Cheers, Ed
edh3007 - because 30.06 was already taken :-)

Another good day yesterday..... Some familiar faces dropped by..... Sam and Hugh, Hawk and Allison James Terrio and Angie.......I met Bored2deth and edh ....... Much of the day is something of a blur.......saw an interesting new sharpening stone and hopefully there will be more on that later...... Met up with Neil Hogue whose company makes Allen Eleshiwitz's factory knives....... Got to have a lovely dinner with Neil, his wife Kayla, and Allen ...... Am still a little zonked a Ndebele as I write this there are two girls soccer teams aged about Eight sharing a quiet breakfast time in an acoustically hard room with me...... I truly.... Gotta go......More later.....

Will be at Smoky today till at least three.....

One thing a person can't complain about if they want to make the trip are gas prices. Saw $2.61 posted for reg yesterday in TN.

We had a great time at SMKW yesterday, best I have ever had. Bought a few things here and there. Saw some nice new knives to drool over...got to handle the new kukri hehe (neener neener!). The new kukri was as I expected..excellent. weight was solid and forward, easily controlled and smooth in hand. Bites like a tiger! 16s, escobars, 11s..oh my! I am quite certain I would not want to miss on a heavy swing. :-) Will likely be working on getting one for work lol...and play. Hehe..even brought along the Grabble (my oldest kept, most heavily used 11.), for Mr.Becker to see.

Enjoyed meeting, talking, and laughing with Mr.Becker. Hes quite a guy. We had some good talks and laughs, and he can sure put an edge on a knife fast! I look forward to speaking with him again. It was great to talk with another person whom loves both practice with knives and martial arts as much as I do.

Also, a big thank you to Mr.Becker and the Esee rep, for the kindnesses, and for helping me to finally figure out what was killing my edges. Tested it while I was writing this. My heavily-used mule would cut clean and well, but had little burrs in the edge..tried it on my old waterstone.. cut clean and well..but would still catch. Tried it on a hard arkansas stone.. Took maybe 5-6 swipes on each side..whittles paper, shaves clean, cuts clean..no catchy grabby. My old water stone was ruining my edges.. Got my thumb, when my goofy dog bumped me..cut my thumb well too..ow.

Look what I got my grubby hands on. Well for a couple of minutes. I wanted something to chop so bad.

I made it back to the ridge after another fun filled day........ As per usual on day three, I cannot remember hardly a thing, other than enjoying myself..... All in all a really great time....... Talked myself silly, I did...... I left just before three when I started to stumble over words ....... It just struck me that I probably talked to a hundred people and met not one single person I did not enjoy....... Blade people are the best..... Many thanks to all of you who showed up........ Damn, it was a GOOD time!!!!!!!......

Well, I just parted with my Kabar Kukri, which is more than fine by me with the looks of that new 21. :)
