Smooth Out Micarta?

This may seem like a common question, or one that's already been answered, but bear with me.

I have a knife which has a coated blade. It has micarta scales which can be taken off. On one of the scales, the fit to the tang is a little proud. I'd like to remove a little micarta to match it up better to the tang. I figured I could just go at it with my Dremel, but I don't want to mess up the coating on the steel.

I'm sure there's a simple solution, but it escapes me. Any help?

If the scales can be removed as you stated, use a coarse file or sandpaper 60-80 grit to slowly work it until a perfect fit. Just take off a smidge at a time and you should be good.

So just use sandpaper going up through grit until I get a match? I wasn't sure if that was the best way but I thought maybe it was.

Thanks.

You'll probably have to work through grits til it gets close to matching. To make it match perfectly you'll probably have to go over the entire scale with that last grit. No big deal.
