Sometimes it may not be a good thing for a lock bar to disengage too eaisly. It can cause accidental closing. If a lock bar "sticks" too much for someone using it all you have to do is rub a pencil (graphite) on the back of the tang. I've done this with my Strider SNG and PT - worked great. I've also had some frame locks that had very strong intregal locks and were a little hard to close. For the ones that I like to open & close all the time, I pushed the lock bar very slightly away from the handle and then they were fine. If someone decides to do this I caution to be very careful. If you over bend the lock bar it could ruin the frame lock and cause blade play.
I understand where you're coming from, but knowing "audiopile", he tends to try out a knife & if it works to his satisfaction, he'll get 1 or 2 more & they become his EDC/EDU & he USES them. By that I mean that he's actually broken tips & stuff & is continuously looking for hard use knives, but that are easy to use.
I've had my share of customs, Sebs, Umnum, Striders (PTs & SnGs), along with reg. production models (Currently really like my G-10 scaled BM 760 M4) & I'd have to say that the smoothest to unlock is the Umnumzaan. As at least 1 previous poster mentioned, the ceramic detent is just in a class by itself.
Now, as far as my smoothest opening knife, it'd have to be my Todd Begg Glimpse with IKBS. It is easily the best flipper I've ever tried, handled, owned, used, etc. I imagine most knives with a IKBS pivot or something similar would be about the same, but it is amazing.
IIRC though, audio might not like or be able to use an Umnum for work because of various municipal's restrictions on blade length on a folding knife, which is too bad.
