Good Evening,

Super-newbie here...working on my first knife. This knife has many flaws, but in particular i want to know how i can avoid those smudges on the blade. I grinded the bevels up to 120 grit w/a bubble-jig at 5%. then i had sanded up to 1000 grit on a flat surface. I'm open to all critique and look forward to this journey. Thanks in advance!

Is this heat treated yet? What kind of steel and where did you get it? Can you go into detail about your process for heat treat and finishing?

Crap...feel like a dummy. Not heat-treated yet. I'd have to send it off, as i don't have a forge -- so i've been trying to learn/do as much as i can without sending it away. I'm supposed to hand-sand after HT though right? 1095 steel btw.

No, you are not a dummy. Knife making is aways a learning curve.

Thanks guys. I definitely have some ghost scratching in there. But those "smudges", for lack of a better word, almost feel as if i could wipe them away like fingerprints. I'll try and HT then re-finish...assuming you guys think that will work?

I'm not sure what the smudges are, but make sure you do normalizing cycles before you quench.

Where is the steel from?

Might just be oxidation or reaction from the oils in your skin. That's just a guess. What chemicals if any are you using to hand sand?
