Came across this guy this afternoon by the canal when we were hiking.

Looks like some type of bull snake to me, but without better/more pictures it is kind of hard to tell

Seriously...northern water snake.
 
Definitely a Northern Water Snake. Non-venomous, and typically non-aggressive, although can strike when provoked. Pretty cool pic of it eating...

Would make a nice inlay on a custom leather sheath...:thumbup:
 
it would help a lot to know exactly where you were when you took the picture.

country/state. alpine/desert. etc.

some snakes look very similar to others but only inhabit specific terrain/territory.
 
Looks like the water snakes we have around here but ours are more uniform brown with less
distinct markings.

It's amazing how many people I know assume they're cotton mouths and shoot them on sight... It's easy to tell the difference even from a distance but most people seem pretty
ignorant when it comes to snakes.
