Snare Wire ?

Try some 7 strand ss deep sea fishing line. I think it is 133# test and you can bend it to form your loops or just use one of your small lead shot sinkers to crimp it to your shape.
I found some inconel safety wire at a surplus sale and it work well and does not rust either. It also comes in diff. gauges.

IUKE12,
I didn't know it was galvanized. It doesn't say on the spool but when I got it, I was looking for stainless. It kindly looks like stainless but, whatever it is, it's pretty nice and thin... 24ga you can loop pretty good without kinking.

I also got a smaller spool of 22ga which I use for projects. It's a little thick for spooling up in my PSK. I may look at that green flower wire in WalMart next time I'm there, that green color may have some benefits.
Here it is, good stuff, looks like stainless. I have some test wire outside in the elements wrapped around a deck post to see how it weathers. No rust whatsoever after 4 months.

Good thread.
Ideally if you can get SS lock wire, that would be the best.
I am pretty sure that is was Doug uses in his kits. Very hard to find in small amounts though.
If you know anyone who works on airplanes, it is commonly used to lock the nuts on engines to keep them from vibrating off.

ss safety wire is also used for motorcycles. i have a small spool of it. there's a few sources for it.

we use fishing leader material, we buy it from gander. dark green black, soft but strong, and it makes good fish line too, I use a crimper and make litle loops and add a snap hook on it, use it for fishing, or for snareing.

thanks for all the answers to my snare ? guys. I love this forum - wish I would have come across it several years ago though... My next thread will be where to get 550 cord cheap and in bulk...but we can knock that ? out here too. Any mainstream (not internet or milsurp) stores carry 550 cord?

on the internet you can't beat cheaperthandirt for getting stuff like that.. I don't know about any mainstream stores...Trying to stay below the radar???

If you live near a Sportsmans Warehouse, they carry 550 cord for really good prices, IIRC i paid 8 dollars for 300 feet. It is in the back of the camping dept. mixed in with all the odds and ends. It is the real stuff, and not paying shipping makes it about the cheapest i have found, only fault is only three colors, OD, white, and black.

Don't forget even if snaring is legal where you are and you are licensed to trap, if it is out of season you can run a foul of the authorities by having snare making equipment on your person.
If we assume this is a life or death survival situation, then legality is not as critical: you do what you gotta do. If I was lost and stranded, I'd love to have someone come by to arrest me. Then I'd be rescued!

So assume we're talking about a lost/stranded scenario. What then becomes critical is the immense effort that snaring a sufficient amount of animals can require.

Only a small percentage of snares will ever catch an animal. You'd need to make a lot of them. That takes time. Once they're set, you may need to let them sit for a couple days. That takes more time.

Eventually, snaring becomes a viable option if you're going to be stranded somewhere for a pretty long time, and you desperately need protein. For that, you'd need a pretty powerful PSK!

I'd recommend investing that limited time and energy in finding edible leaves, berries, or roots in your area: this can keep you safely alive for a week or more before protein loss could ever remotely become a serious problem.

This isn't to say that snaring game isn't a good thing to know, though... but then Codger and Runningboar offer strong advice on the legality of training yourself.

Many people find snaring more work than may be practical. I don't know that I go that far, but you need to consider faster alternatives.

You missed the point. In order, not only to train, but to have it with you often enough that your chances of it being with you should the need arise, you break the law many times, also increasing the odds of crossing paths with enforcement officers. Yes, in a true survival situation, one does what one must in order to survive. I don't think Officer Ranger Sir is going to buy that when you go hiking in Jellystone Park.

I hope I didn't miss anything. If you're going to rely on your ability to snare, you need to learn. That means practice, etc., which means obeying the law. You note this as well.

But: if you're in a life-or-death situation, you don't worry about that. You agreed.

My concern is that catching game in a life-or-death situation may be a poor use of precious time in a PSK-length situation. Snaring is a long-term process.

Help me out--what was it I missed?

I carry premade snares from the snareshop.com ,they have all types of snare making supplies & pre made snares for a very good price & very good quality! They are very lightweight & reliable! They have all sizes & books & pamplets on snaring!

The point...simple posession of a killing device in wildlife habitat is prima facia evidence of intent to use it. No different than carrying a deer rifle where/when there is no open lawful season on deer. No different than standing next to a river with a fishing rod but no license. No different than posessing live bait and treble hooks on a trout stream where it is prohibited. You will receive a citation if you are approached by a wildlife officer (who does have the right to search your posessions if he suspects infractions). If you are lucky, you will not have hunting and fishing license priviledges revoked and suspended for several years.

I am not sure that I can help you but I will give it a try.

Snaring is illegal everywhere except for certain species, at certain times of the year and only by properly licensed people, there are some states that it is illegal period.

So if you are "training" or poaching you are breaking the law, the very act of possessing the implements to snare can get you in trouble with game and fish officers. Now if you wish to "train" and do so within your states laws, rock on, if you go to the woods to "train" with out checking the local laws you are a poacher.

I can't speak for Codger but in a life or death situation anything goes to keep my ass alive. When I am just goofing off in the woods I want to be aware that what I am carrying or doing is legal or not, maybe you are different. Chris

In Georgia I have never had A game warden make me empty my pack, maybe if you were caught doing something illegal, but backpacking I have run into many game wardens & even in the woods you have rights! they have to have a reason to make you empty your pack!

I am also from GA, Oglethorpe Co, and have had my truck searched including my vest and pack that were in it.

Look people, I don't give a big hairy crap what you carry, I just thought someone might want to know that some of the things they routinely carry are illegal, obviously Yall aren't worried about it so more power to you. Chris
