Snare Wire

So I am putting together my survival kit and I was wondering about snare wire.

Does anybody put it in your kit?

Do you buy it someplace, if so where is a good place to get it, or do you use something different entirely.

Or do you just get some wire from the hardware store and use that, if so what kind of wire?

What kind of lengths do people carry?

Any help is appreciated, and I'll be sure to post a pic of my kit when I get it all done.

I use old guitar strings. How did you guess, I don't hunt much? :D

Anyway, guitar strings are probably more expensive than normal snare wire. I carry about 10 feet of it in a small plastic bag.

I use craft wire, go to you nearest craft store and ask for that. I forgot what gauge wire I have but a spool of it will only set you back a few bucks. Don't forget you can use the inside strand of your 550 cord also.

im not extreamly practiced in trap making , but i keep it mainly for repairs ... kinda like bailing wire.... as i learn more and work on traps i might decide its more value in my pack... i have some brass wire i think it was piano wire....

I quit using the wire and moved on to a heavy green Spectra / Offshore Angler "MAGIBRAID" braided fishing line. Super thin & strong, abrasion resistance is great and it will hold a small loop on it's own without bracing or having to hang it. At 130 lb. test it's perfect for trip lines as well and the green is invisible in the bush.
Any Bass Pro Shops store will carry it.

Interesting idea I had never thought of something like that. How do you go about cutting it to length? Can you just use your knife or do you need wire cutters like on a LM?

I keep about 5 little 100 yd. spools in my pack at all times for snares, trips, shelters, fishing, sewing & repairs/lashings. Anything where the 550 would be overkill.

I'm interested in what knots you use with the braided spectra for setting up traps.

I have some old GI issue trip wire. The crafters wire mentioned earlier seems to be about the same build. Just different colors. I also carry 150lb test line. Its super thin for its strength and its green.

I always use snare wire in my kits. It's a great tool for catching food and many other useful things. I either use the colored military type or gold snare wire found at most survival stores. If your not well versed in trapping, there are many books that can walk you right through the subject as well as some DVD's. It's well worth the space it takes up within your survival kit. Here are some books and/or videos that I've read or seen that are great for teaching snaring and trapping.

Buckshot's Modern Trapper's Guide (Book)
(Bruce"Buckshot"Hemming)

Trapper's Bible (Book)
(Dale Martin)

Woods Hoods (DVD)
Volume 5
Traps and Trapping

I have found that single wire snares are only good for a single use and even then occasionaly fail. Nevertheless I still have 2 spools of military trip wire in my small kit for snare purposes.

In my backpack kit I keep 3 dozen cable snares of various sizes.

I use 20ga. necklace wire comes on a spool about like some thread you get 10yrds. and this stuff works great easy deploy and to store also cheap.

that's a great idea, thanks for bringing this up+++++

I bought some thin gauge wire at Walmart a while back. I carry it in my kit, & I carry more than I need so that I have room to screw up.
