I quit using the wire and moved on to a heavy green Spectra / Offshore Angler "MAGIBRAID" braided fishing line. Super thin & strong, abrasion resistance is great and it will hold a small loop on it's own without bracing or having to hang it. At 130 lb. test it's perfect for trip lines as well and the green is invisible in the bush.
Any Bass Pro Shops store will carry it.

I would really be interested to see some pics if you get a chance, I know working at a yacht club a lot of that stuff would be perfect, and like you said it will hold knots and loops easily.
