Snares and fishing kit in survival kit.

Gonna quote my GrandMa Bessie again : 'Huh - huntin is man foolishiness - if you want to eat put out a snare". Even at around 10 this made sense - what was really disapointing was she wasn't willing to teach me how at that young age ( probably justifiably afraid that a snare settin 10 year old in the suburbs was gonna be trouble - unlike her childhood in the hollows of West Virginia ).
One thing I did pick up from her is I spot game trails all the time - this is probably why I have a little more confidence in being able to snare something over being able to hook something ( too many pleasant but unproductive hours spent with hook and line). Wouldn't worry too much about the ins and outs of butchering - except for a few critters like skunks - most any fresh meat well roasted is going to be edible - it's appearance won't be a problem after a day or two of not eating.

Keep in mind that those averages everyone is talking about goes both ways. By that I mean "THEY" say they can find and rescue you in an "AVERAGE" of 72 hours. What if it takes longer, or they just quit looking for you?

Anything can happen, you can be a sleep or in dense cover while a SAR team flys over you and now that area is considered searched, for now at least, and you missed your chance.

It would really suck to be weak and come to the conclusion that they have given up on you. Now you have to find food in a weaken state. I do not see any problem with looking for food right away.

You can not control what everyone else does, but you can control what you do.

Just a thought.

Exactly...The best thing about taking the snares though is the mental boost it gives you when you suceed. Remember Tom Hanks in that stupid movie when he finally makes a fire? It's the same kind of thing. The best time to stroke your ego is when your life depends on it. I know I canot go very long without food due to low blood sugar, but I can push myself quite a way and stretch those Power Bars until I find something else.

Wrong attitude and probably completely wrong factually. Military teaches 45-60 days without food. They have some guys with no body fat there also.

Carry fishhooks if you want. It isn't a priority for me.

I would think that some one who went 60 days without food would not have the strength to fish, set snares or even walk out once they reduced their delema . Much military survival is about E&E but the manuals still have sections on traps and foraging . IMHO if you wait more than a few days to find food it is going to have a negative effect on your survival .
60 days without food probably would do some very bad ilreverseable things to your body as well.
