2-part question: 1) What is your favorite/best wire for small animal snares and 2)what do you consider a good commercially-available snare(s)

My choice is fishing wire leaders and 15 lb galvanized picture hanging wire. I like the picture hanging wire because it is multistrand and resistant to breakage by the animal twisting in the snare. For the commercially, available, I'm only familiar with 1 brand, the Thompson steel snares which have been around for eons and well-known for their quality.

boulder outdoor survival school sells some.
I prefer to make my own cordage 'cuz in a pinch you might not have a wire to build your set with.

I just use the wire from the local Home Depot. Usually anything from 22 to 28 gauge. Costs about a buck and a half a roll. Right on the aisle with the nuts and bolts.

You ever try to tie a loop in the end of a guitar string? Not too easy. The stuff is smooth and springy and wants to unravel. I use guitar string for a variety of things (my favorite being a spring bobber for ice fishing) but I think it is unsuitable for snare work unless you can get a loop in both ends. If you cut it to length and or use a compression fitting of some sort to create a loop on the loopless end, it might work. I would pass the free end through the "eye" that is already on one end and then try to make a loop in the other end somehow by soldering, epoxy, or some other method. I dunno. If you can make it work, I think it would be great snare wire.

I got a new set of string for my 6 stringer lying around so next time I change strings, I'll see what I can come up with.
