I've been trying to get rid of some tree rats that are annoying the dogs at work. Peanut butter and cornmeal mixed together has been working pretty well. It sticks anywhere and rain doesn't seem to wash it away. I don't know if it's because I'm leaving scent behind, but it needs to be in place for a couple days before they start checking it out, hence the need to have something that doesn't wash away. YMMV.
Target a species, study that species, observe that species' habits/environment/dietary preferences. In a quazi-Zen sense, BE the animal. All animals will have a preference, and only when that runs out or in short supply will they move on to other means of food/bait. The reason some lures work so well is that they possess that animal's preferred taste(sweet, salty, leafy, nutty, etc.) in amounts that they can't find in nature.
Trapping/snaring can be very rewarding and fun(there's a reason they call them game animals, it's a game of wits ), but to be effective it takes practice and patience, and a lot of observation. I'd suggest trying to find a local licensed trapper that might be willing to give some suggestions or let you tag along setting lines. Words are words, but doing is knowing.
Best of luck with the snares and finding a bait/setup that works for ya.
