If you've got a good place to shoot, the working up handloads, tinkering and tuning is sure fun with a centerfire.
Hope you folk in windy country are doing well. I was just about to complain about some harsh wind last night, but it's no where near tornado strength. More like monsoon type, with the rain and all.
Tangent, I'm debating if I should buy more accessories for my rimfire, or buy a big boy rifle. More magazines, new scope and/ or new stock vs picking up something in .223/5.56. Was eyeing a mini-14. Spike's Tactical also has complete rifles for decent prices as well. Decisions, decisions.
One con on the AR that has me hesitating: I'd have to slap a bullet button (or a ridiculous grip) on it. Which brings me more in favor of the Mini-14 at the cost of accuracy... although one could get it accurized for a pretty penny. But at that point, one would have thrown down enough money for a tricked out AR instead of getting the 14 ~MOA/ sub MOA. But then again, I'm not that great of a shot (yet!), so the stock accuracy of a mini 14 should be ok... for now.
Ah, life be stressful![]()
the Mini is a blast to shoot -- there are cheap things you can do to it to improve accuracy/reduce the tendency towards "spaghetti barrel".
Does anyone have the sheath for a 3 they are looking to get rid of (traded for cash of course) I just got one and it doesn't come with a sheath, but this is gonna be kept in my car, so it is hard to rationalize getting a Sky work of art for it...
For me, it's the fact that I do not like the AR platform and have hated it since the first time i did a military qualification on an M-16.
I understand they have improved over the years, but there are still things about the platform I don't like.
The mini 14 works well, has acceptable accuracy for what i use a semi-auto for, and isn't made of tactical tupperware.
Nothing wrong with the SU-16 from what I've heard, but I've never had a chance to shoot one.
OTOH, I agree that the Howa's are a great value fo quality rifle.
Got lucky here -- storm tracked 20 miles South of Topeka rather than 20 mile North...
Co-worker not so lucky. F2 wiped half her little town off the map, including her house & her hubby's farm truck.

Damn, that sucks about the house and truck! Does she have insurance to cover it?
Uh oh, "spaghetti barrel"? I better look that up. Is it an issue with the newer (post 2005), more accurate versions as well?
EDIT: The heavier barreled, 581XXXX serial numbers (the newer ones) + Har-Bar struts, anyone have experience with both?
Its just a flaw in the design. Barrel rebounds off the stock, barrel whip. No way to float it, and unless you can make it whip the same way everytime, its not going to be accurate. That big ass, dumb looking compensator on the "target" model, is there as a harmonic resonance dissipator, basically, weights the barrel down to where it rebounds the same way. Know what? It don't work.
