So, I'm planning on making a firepit in the spring. I'm putting together the "proposal" for the parent's since it's their house and yada yada yada. Right now I'm trying to decide, square or circle pit. $58 for the round being 18" (17.5") tall and 4' around, versus the $122.xx being 24" tall with a 2" lip at 16" to hold a grill and being 4'x4' square.
While round is more pleasing to the eye, I personally would prefer the taller version to allow cooking to be involved (unless you intend to have a grill on the round one also).
The difference in price is for cinder blocks for the square versus using paver stones for the round.
I'm not a fan of either the cinder blocks or the cement pavers for fire pits. Non-cement pavers MAY work, depending on the material the pavers are made of. The cement cinder blocks/pavers both tend to give up the ghost after just a couple of years of "hard" fire use. I prefer double-wall style pits with fire brick being used for the inner wall and then using river rocks for the external "decorative" layer. The fire brick withstands the heat better and the river rock looks better.
You can then use high-temp fire brick mortar for thin grout lines internally (it's really just used more as a glue to hold the bricks together) and get by with "regular" mortar for the outer layer. A little more expensive up front (fire brick cost), but you don't have to repair them as often or as extensively.
