Sneak Peek from Fiddleback HQ 06/16/2015

Great pics Bud, thanks for posting! Those custom shop Camps look awesome! Also, I see the BC Jr I have wanted all along, so maybe that handle config will be revisited after I recover financially from Blade :)

:thumbup:Thanks for sharing Bud. Missed your Sneek Peek last week. Where will the custom shop production camp knives, and T shirts be available?

We will have a few of the custom Camp knives available this Friday. T-shirts sold fast at the show and we only have a smattering of odd sizes left. We'll see what we have and make them available.

They're working on the construction at the new shop this week. Finally. So in upcoming sneak peeks, expect to see a much less cluttered and cramped and dirty shop! 10 folks working in 1000 sq ft is just not getting it done and I'm embarassed at the way the shop looks.

Clean shop = non productive shop. That's what I tell my wife. :D

Custom Shop Production Camp Knife vs regular production camp Knife? I see premium handles on the Custom Shop models, is this a tier below full blown custom models?

I see different terms describing the Mid-Techs (productions).

Two lines of Knifes:
  1. Custom knifes which have been around for some time with the beautiful layered handles.
  2. Mid-Tech (production) knifes with the single colored handles.

The 'custom shop' production Camp Knives are Mid-Tech Production blades with custom material hand shaped handles. The standard Production knives have CNC cut handles available in only 2 colors.

I just wonder if the use of 'custom shop' is going to cause issues with being able to spec out specific handle materials. With the new shop, more folks, a better understanding of the supply and production chains and more storage space, it would be interesting to see if they could put say 5-10 true custom orders of standard patterns in the process for the week. Not sure how to fill out the order book, track it and all, but it may be something to think about in growing the business long term. I'd probably pay a $50-100 premium to ensure I got what I wanted instead of sharking and hoping. Now, I'm not sure I'd pay that much to get it six or eight months out-- but I might to be able to put together a collection to rival Bud's runts.

Remember, my business advice is probably worth about what you paid for it....(And with the cost of your time factored in, you probably lost money reading this.:))

Curiosity sated. Thanks Bud

Remember too that the mid-tech based models have a different steel, too. So the "custom shop" Camps have the "upgraded" steel (but with initial grinds done out of shop) and the handles of the normal handmade line, so it's not really a midpoint between the two.

Maybe over thinking that Blaine. I dont see Andy taking 'orders' for custom handled production blades. He's adding some custom handles to some production S35V Camp Knife blanks. He is customizing some Camp Knife blanks .. pretty sure that's the jist of it. I joked with Andy about the 'custom shop' moniker - nothing more than that. I did ask about him doing to same with the other S35V production blanks and his answer was 'maybe in the future'. I (personally) would like to have some S35V Hiking Buddys and Runts with Andy shaped custom material handles in my repertoire. :) - but we gotta remember Andy has his hands on every hand made knife that goes thru his shop .. and true customs take up time due to focus and attention to personalized details.

I'm guessing this is it as well. They're custom because they have handle materials hand shaped instead of the machined black and natural micarta.

Correct me if I missed something along the way but I believe the Camp Knives are 3V not S35VN.

Could be .. I dont really listen that closely when people start talking steel types. :) - they're stainless and made by a machine.

Love shop pics' even when in disarray !
