Sneak Preview

Very nice Dan. I have wondered how a handle like that would look on a Khurk. You did a excellent job. I would be very interested in seeing the sub hilt on the Bowie along with everyone else here. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing.

for the longest time at my old shop in Maryland, I had hanging on my wall a drawing of a subhilt AK Bowie - fully dressed out. It was an inspiration for me (still is). I'd love to do one, with mild steel fittings and stabilized wood. Might do it someday. The guard and butt plate were 2" wide, and everything was angled. There's plenty of tang to work with on the AKB...so who knows....!?!

Sure would make a heckuva knife....

Dan,

Added stats in the measurements thread. (Looked more carefully at your criterion for measuring, if you notice a little difference with what I posted earlier!)

John

Subhilt is nice work, but doesn't do it for me on the AK. I'd have to pick it up to make a real judgement, though. I do like that the wood and brass seem to be blended into each other - not sure if this is just the way I'm seeing the pic.

On the Bowie - is this a stock AK bowie, or the extra long-handled Halberd style? Handle looks a bit long, but that could just be because it got slimmed down. The brass version looks nice, but I agree it would take some redesigning to make it right. Plus, given the blade profile, a guard doesn't make much sense.

Overall nice work Dan!

If you're looking for a donor blade for that project, Dan, we may need to talk.

Excellent work, in particular on the subhilt khuk. Words do not adequately convey the utter coolness of it.

shoot me an email, Satori. We'll make it happen.

Spectre:

My stats vs. your stats & difference
A = 2.563" - - 2.250" - - 0.313"
B = 3.875" - - 3.750" - - 0.125"
C = 3.375" - - 3.000" - - 0.375"
D = 4.500" - - 4.375" - - 0.125"
E = 1.563" - - 1.375" - - 0.188"

This is very good. I think it's going to fit your hand very nicely. Here's the neat part: I can fit my hand between the subhilt and butt plate - and actually prefer that position for hard chopping on the 2x4. When I need more accurate hits, I just slip back into the subhilt grip.

Just remember, this chiruwa is a thick and heavy blade! If you've got the forearm strength, you'll do fine.

I did some Photoshop work to make some comparisons.

First the AKB by itself:

Then the AKB compared to the regular model:

AKB compared to the deeply fullered model (shown on Yahoo Store):

AKB compared to the blade (after removing handle; cleanup)

AKB compared to the drawing I made initially:

I tried to get the pictures to overlap the best I could....but there's always a little parallax in every photo unless it's taken absolutely dead-on....but it's good enough for comparison's sake.
