With Christmas only a few days away, I thought I'd start a thread in which we could show off any gift knives we receive or give for Christmas; knives from birthdays are fine with me, too, since my birthday and Christmas are less than a week apart. I'll start off with a birthday gift I got this week.
Monday was my 65th birthday, and when I got up about 5:30am, I checked my email as usual and found a message from my daughter who lives in Madrid. She wished me a happy day, and then told me how to find a little wrapped package hidden in plain sight on the bookshelves in her old bedroom. She had been home for a couple of months this summer and returned to Spain near the end of August, so the package must have been up there for almost 4 months! What a sneaky young woman!
I opened it to find a wonderful knife from the workshop of Mariano Zamorano in Toledo, Spain.
I'm not good at identifying wood; does anyone recognize the wood used for the covers?
I really like the design of that bird's-eye pivot!
Here's the other side; note that this side of the pivot pin looks a bit different.
The backspring is worked a bit: (I was obviously overcome by excitement when I typed THAT!
The liners are obviously where the file work was done.)
Here are a couple of shots of the open knife:
One final shot of the knife in a different context.
(Does it seem like the blade etch is on an unexpected side of the blade?)
Anyway, I was suitably surprised, happy, and grateful for this thoughtful gift from my "little girl".
I look forward to seeing whatever The Porch would like to share!
