Sneaky Daughter Surpises Old Dad; Please Show Your Christmas & Birthday Knives

What a wonderful story!

I'm breaking the rules of your thread, but almost two years ago my wife surprised me on our tenth anniversary with this Bark River Adventurer that I carry practically every day.

Thanks for all the birthday greetings and other kind words, everyone! :)

Happy Birthday, GT!

What a lovely surprise to wake up to on your birthday. It's a great looking knife and looks to be very comfortable in the hand. And, kudos to her for executing it perfectly. If I were to attempt something like that there would be a good chance I'd forget it was hidden there, only to rediscover it years later while looking for something else.

Didn't she also surprised you over the summer with another Mariano Zamorano knife? The trip you took together to his workshop in Toledo must have made quite an impression. :)
Thanks, Greg. I really like the finger notch just behind the pivot (which I first foolishly thought was the world's worst-pleced EO notch :o). If you remember that MZ knife she gave me when she arrived for a visit this summer, I doubt if you'd forget about a "delayed gift" for a few years! The other Zamorano knife is quite similar in size and general shape, but has synthetic covers.

Happy birthday to a fellow Sagitarian.
Good looking knife. Your daughter has excellent taste.

My 64th birthday was four days before your 65th.
I received a pair of AG Russell War Eagle knives from my wife and daughter.

For various reasons, which I shan't go into here, I have already received my Christmas knife, a Case mini-copperhead in Tru-sharp and sawcut crimson bone.

Frank, I noticed when you mentioned your (almost-forgotten) "when I'm 64" birthday that we're the same age for 4 days each year. Hardly seems fair that you're not only younger and more handsome than me, but also more mature despite your youth! Your birthday War Eagles and Christmas mini-copperhead are all very desirable knives; congrats!

What a beautiful gift from a thoughtful daughter Gary. I really like everything about that knife, from the wood (Beech or Olive Wood?), the overall shape of the handle flowing into the blade, the heavily coined liners and the blade shape. What's the closed length on that one?
Thanks, Bob. I measure it to be 4 1/8" closed.

Happy birthday GT!!

That is a really nice looking knife. The worked back Spring and pivot really add character with that beautiful wood. I did a little reading on Mariano Zamorano, what an impressive background!!! Very cool
I agree, StoneBeard, Señor Zamorano has quite an internet "footprint" and "impressive" is a good word to describe what I've read about him, too.

My grandson received an early Christmas present from Randy Redden here on the forums. A Case Mini Copperlock with CV blade. He's quite pleased with it. Thank you very much Randy (such a very good friend). You made the lad very happy. :D:cool:

Thanks for posting that one for your grandson, Bob! Randy, way to go; you must get kind of warm wearing your Santa outfit year-round!

That knife must be made by Miguel Nieto.
The wood is birch

That's very interesting, and kind of mysterious, information, Llasi; thanks! That Nieto certainly looks identical to what my daughter got me in Zamorano's shop; is it "legal" in Spain to polish off the maker's etch and put your own on the other side of the blade?

Happy birthday, GT and Frank! What great gifts to have received! Kudos, Randy, for the wonderful gift to Bob's grandson. I know what knife I've got under the tree, and I just can't wait to get it in hand!

I'm very excited to see this thread progress over the weekend!
+5K  Well-said, Shawn! I hope by Sunday evening this thread will give evidence that we can say, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good knife!"

Very cool, Gary!! I hope you get a lot of use out of it.

I guess we know who dosn't dust her old bedroom :)
Steve, I keep the door to her room closed. Are you telling me dust still gets in there?!? :D

I've told my family I don't need anymore new knives for Christmas this year. A few keep sneaking through though! ;) :D

Like these from Duncan I received today! :)

Congrats, Jack, on those sharp sneaky interlopers! Very well-played, Duncan!! ;)

As they say, MeanStreaker, it's the thought that counts; you're fine with posting that Bark River anniversary gift here!

I believe that Zamorano has not made any of those two knives.
It is not uncommon to find the same knife with different marks.
Navajas Salamandra.

GT A clever and welcome surprise your daughter prepared for you  Well done! Fancy retiring soon or staying on longer? That wood could very well be Birch, but might be Olive or even Box I think.

Enjoy your Christmas & New Year:)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARY!!! such a great gift from your WONDERFUL, thoughtful daughter. Very clever on her part.

A neat thread for sure:thumbup::cool: A great gift for a great guy:cool:

I gifted myself a case Texas jack for Christmas!😀 Couldn't resist the perfect walk and talk and blade combo.

Hey Gary -from what I can gather you must be a pretty cool Dad- so this is PayBack in Kind my friend, well done - with having such a lovely daughter and her knives she gifts!

Merry Christmas my friend.

Happy birthday to both Gary and Frank. That's a beautiful knife, Gary! I guessed olive wood as well at first, before Llasi identified it as birch. You obviously raised a fine daughter and I'm chuckling that she pulled one over on her old man!
Merry Christmas to all!

Yes I did actually! Fantastic little airgun.

I've heard good things about them. I have an old crosman 1008 ( looks like a s&w 45 auto but is technically a revolver Internally ) , and it's definitely a fun can plinker though I don't shoot it often due to the extra expense of co2.
I just recently got my 1979 Sheridan blue streak back from getting the barrel soldered back on and receiver drilled and tapped for a Williams peep sight, and while it's not technically any more of a tack driver than it was before that peep sight sure helps me do my part.
If it wasn't for this I would have gotten a few more knives, but I do have other Interests and it is my favorite gun so it was my top priority ( also have to feed it and ammo is 15$ per tin )

Very knice Gary, it's great when they understand enough about dad's obsession to get something we'd like. Enjoy abd Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I really like the character of the wood on that knife GT! I'm hoping I may get something this Christmas as I very plainly made it clear what I wanted when family asked what to get me for Christmas ;) If something shows up under the tree I'll be sure to share it here.

I was visiting my parents this week and we exchanged Christmas presents early. My Dad gave me this Case Sod Buster Jr. in CV.

I had a black SBJ many years ago and carried it often. At one point the tip broke and it eventually was put away in a drawer or box and was subsequently lost. Fast foward a couple of decades and I was recently telling my Dad how even after collecting GEC knives and more expensive traditionals, I still had a soft spot in my heart for that Everyman knife, the Case Sod Buster Jr. He was listening well and surprised me with this one.

Even though I'm almost 60, I felt like a kid again to receive a pocket knife from my Dad for Christmas!

I don't know if I'm gonna receive any knives but I am certainly giving some. I bought my Dad a Benchmade Griptilian. The handles are sand colored and the blade is the black coated sheepsfoot. I am still planning on getting my cousin a knife of some kind. I would have got my Grandfather a knife but I already gave him a GEC #82 Dixie Stockman in African Blackwood I believe it was. A shame I never took any pictures of it. He really loved it. He said he's never seen a knife so nice and my Grandfather dares not take it to work with him, he works knives really hard and so does my Dad. I hope my Dad likes his Griptilian. He doesn't have much use for a traditional pocket knife, my Grandfather is the one who likes those. I'm more in the middle. Enough of that tangent. Merry Christmas!

I dont have pictures since they are all wrapped up but I made my niece a 3'x6' (she wanted to put human size zombie targets up) live edge knife throwing target and got her a bunch of cheap beginner knives and what not. It is what she asked for and her dad didnt want to make it but they gave me permission to. She is a true tomboy and will go fishing with me and plays a lot of sports.

Basically this....

Llasi, I'm very impressed by your knowledge of folding knifes produced in Spain! In almost no time at all, you found Nieto and Salamandra models that certainly appear to be identical to the knives my daughter bought in Zamorano's shop. It's a little bit disappointing to me to discover that the knives are from regular production runs, instead of "practice knives" made by apprentices at the workshop, which is what my daughter and I had thought was the case based on conversations when we discovered the shop together 2 years ago. (And if my daughter, who doesn't have a lot of money, paid "hand made" prices for relatively inexpensive "mass produced" knives, I'd consider that to be wrong/unethical/shady.) But the main thing is those knives represent a connection between my daughter and me, and serve as a physical reminder and memory-enhancer of our trip together to Toledo, and that's true regardless of the actual origin of the knives involved. (When I was in Spain, I looked at many Nieto and Salamandra knives in cuchillerias, but couldn't justify buying more souvenir knives than the ones I had already purchased; looks like now I have an example from each of those makers after all! I seem to recall a woman working in one knife shop explaining some kind of family relationship between the owners of Nieto and Salamandra; does that seem correct, Llasi?)

Hickory n Steel, are the knives you posted ones you received, or ones you gave? I think that's the Recruit you've been carrying many consecutive days now, isn't it? And didn't you once mention that you had a pearl tiny trapper to give your grandma?

buffalo01, congrats on the Texas Jack!

Sounds good! What you clearly wanted didn't happen to be something from Tuna Valley, did it?? ;)

Great story, Ratbert; congrats on "getting back" a SBJr!

Have to admit I've never considered getting someone THAT for Christmas! Sounds like you're going to make your niece very happy, KK!

Thanks again to everyone for all the kind words, birthday wishes, and Christmas greetings!! I'm getting ready to be happy for a bunch of you in the next 48 hours or so! :D
