Sneaky Peek! Sage 5 Rex 121, Tenacious Titanium D2, Manix 2 Lightweight 15V

Absolutely love Rex-121 on my two offerings

For those of you with Rex-121 knives, how are the factory edges - are the edge angles fairly consistent and even (including comparing one side with the other)? Getting a VG-10 knife where one edge is off a little can be fixed without too much trouble, but good luck if the Rex-121 edges are not even (I'm not currently set up to sharpen something like Rex-121).

I recently bought several of the PD#1 Sprint knives, and I'm disappointed that some of the edges are not very even.

It will not be perfectly symmetrical I don’t think I’ve ever owned one from any maker that was . Some better then others of course and as far sharpening if you have the proper stones including diamond it should only take a few minutes longer. So the correct tools and patience and skill you should be fine . Also unless your just re-profiling to make it look better it’s not necessary for functionality reasons since it will be just as sharp either way as long as your consistently sharpening the same angle on that particular side and the degree can change on the other side as long as it’s consistent on the side your sharpening. Another tip is never let them get dull if possible I normally lightly strop mine a couple times a week if there used with some bark River black compound and then green on a leather block strop. I’m far from a professional knife sharpener but I have many years of trial and error a long with research that has served me well.
Hope this helps 👍🏻

IMG_2863.jpegIMG_2864.jpegIMG_2865.jpegI have to admit I never carried a Sage Spyderco before! I bought the Maxamet G10 on one of the MAP holidays but never used it. I’ve been carrying the Rex version this week and today added a Lynch clip. It’s an amazing design and one I’m sure to enjoy for long time. Probably add some titanium scales in the future.

I have a sage 2 that I have only carried a half dozen or so times but agree that the new offerings woke me up to the quality of the design.

How bad is REX121 to sharpen VS Maxamet?
A few minutes longer if you’re sharpening a V edge (the stock edge) or a few seconds longer if you’re running micro bevels.

Nothing ridiculous…in fact, I was quite let down about the time required as online and in the knife steel chart app all I ever read was it wasn’t easy to sharpen and no one would actually polish it. I polished mine to a mirror - the bevel, not the apex, which is #600 - and it didn’t take long. It takes a really nice mirror polish.
I also ground out the coarse blade finish - which might be about #60 or so and then buffed - to an Atoma #140 finish and that didn’t take long either.
