SnG edge angle

Hi, guys. Does anyone know if Strider sends their stock SnGs out of the shop with a particular and consistent angle on their edges, and if so what it is?

I'm wondering if I put my SnG to the Sharpmaker diamond rods at 30 degrees inclusive for a back bevel, will it be manageable time-wise... that is, I don't want to be at it for more than one hour tops. So if its stock angle is too far off from 30 degrees then I won't even bother... instead I'll finally get off my butt and order a DMT XC and blade guide or their aligner kit.

I'm pretty interested in this too. Just today I received my SNG and was wondering what the best way to sharpen it is. My only sharpening system is the Sharpmaker.

Seems like you're on quite a roll with some nice scores lately!

Regarding the SnG and Sharpmaker... the other day I used the diamond rods to bring down the back bevel on one side of my S30V Military that was unevenly ground out of the box. One side was a cool and smooth 15 degrees down the entire blade. The other side was crap--15 degrees in some areas and up to ~25 degrees in other spots... whoever ground it must've been high! Anyway, all told, it probably took close to an hour to get it down to a clean and consistent 15 degrees.

Given that, I'm guessing the SnG's Fatty-fat Fat-fat S30V blade won't fare too well on the Sharpmaker's not very course diamond rods... even WAY less so if the brown medium rods are as course as you can go with your set-up. But let's hope others in the same boat have a different story to tell.

Grab either a good water stone, or diamond stone. Strider hand grinds the edges to a pretty average angle probably around 17-22 per side. Right now I have a nice shiny steeper than factory edge on mine.

Ask Tom Krein what angle he uses.

The SnG is not known for a thin edge, simply due to it's utilitarian design. But, if you're not chopping concrete or breaking steel strap banding with one, it would be nice to get a thinner edge. Darned S30V doesn't cooperate much in the process tho.

Had I the money, Krein isn't too far off in Arkansas, I'd send mine to him. Being out of work two months this year has blunted my bank account and left my knife dull.

Back to the DMT kit.

I want to say that I have seen someplace that Strider normally uses an edge angle of around 22-25 per side (44-50 overall) at the factory. My SnG would tend to agree with this.

I thinned it down using a DMT diamond stone leaned up against the Sharpmaker rods. It worked well, but still took a long time to get it down to the 30 degree setting on the Sharpmaker.

From the probably forever unofficial Strider FAQ:
"Strider knives usually leave the shop with a 22.5 degree (+-.5) angle one each side or 45 degree (+-1) inclusive."

Emphasis on usually...and this really doesn't however change the fact that my SMF measures 40 degree inclusive...best thing is to measure if there's need to be sure.
