SnG or SMF?

The Strider bug has bit me; only question is should it be an SnG or SMF? I don't have access to either, so the decision has to be made based on specifications ,and what I can see and read about on the net. The knife would be for EDC: just general use.

Larger is better in my mind, but at the same time, I want to be able to EDC it with just about any clothing. I am average size with average size hands. Does anyone have both that could give my any advice based on their own experiences with these knives? Thanks very much.

Because the LARGE choil is integral to the blade, you will find that the SnG offers a LARGE handle with MANY options for grip... I recommend you do a search on youtube for both. There is a guy with both, and you will see the differences. The SnG is a PERFECT EDC IMO.

I'd go SnG as well. The SMF is a big knife along the lines of a Manix, not very subtle for everyday use. The SnG handles are comfortable for just about any size hands.

Another vote for SnG.
I wear an XL size glove and SnG fits great in the hand, but isn't obnoxiously large for EDC

I thought the difference between the two was just length, however, the sng is smaller in every way imaginable. Thinner, lighter ( a lot) and smaller. This doesn't help much but remember the sng is smaller than it looks in the pictures compared to the smf. That said... it is a great sized blade capable for almost anything a "pocket knife" is able to do!

Wow-very good and quick advice. Sort of confirms what I've been thinking. As much as I like, say the SMF RW-1 for its "cool" factor, I think the SnG would be a better everyday use knife ( not to mention a litttle cheaper).

Please continue with any thoughts, but very much appreciate what you all have passed along.

I've personally had both, I love the Gunner Grips, I really want to get my hands on an SMF with gunner grips, right now I have an SnG with GG and it's great.

you also have the SMF CC models to consider. I have not handeled one yet but they are designed to be less bulky to carry. Many who have them say that the cc models carry very much like an SNG just with a little added length.

On paper the difference in size between the two doesn't seem all that great. In person, however, the SMF is much larger/beefier than the SnG. You can't go wrong with either but, between the two, I would (and did:D) go for the SnG for EDC use (that being said, the RW-1 is starting to tempt me as well... ;)).

Hi Bob,

I have an SnG I bought from Plaza Cutlery (plug!) several years ago. It is my favorite EDC.

That said I have an SMF on the way. Just wanted to have one. I have a Manix and love it (I carried it a lot). From what I can tell the SMF & the Manix are close in size. The Manix didn't bother me at all in the pocket.

You can't go wrong with either the SNG or the SMF. You might end up with both...

Here are three images of an SMF & SNG stonewashed. Note the thickness of the SMF compared to the SNG. I find the SNG to be much more comfortable in my pocket than the SMF. However, the SMF is the closest thing to a fixed blade in a folder I have had.

GSW did you go and buy my SMF I returned? DigiCamo on black handles?

I've never had a SMF, but I've had 3 different SnGs, along with a few Buck/Strider 882s & 889s. My point being is that the SnG is a relatively light knife for its size (4.5 oz.). The B/S 882 (G-10 version) is 5.4 oz. & the SMF weighs 6.0 oz.

The SMF is obviously thicker, but it's also 1/2" longer. The SnG's blade is 3.5" (Not all blade, because of the choil, but the SMF's blade isn't all edge, either). That size blade should be plenty big enough for the EDC duties of a folder, especially if you're planning on carrying it in your pocket. The people that I know that do EDC a SMF, prefer to carry them in a sheath on their belt.

As for comfort, again, I've never had or tried a SMF, but my hands are XXL (For gloves, anyways) & I find the SnG to be very comfortable. The grips shape, & I'd imagine it's the same with the SMF only bigger, is great for several different grip styles & that's the beauty of the PT, SnG, & SMF. I had a PT & I really liked it, but it really was too small to take advantage of the design of that knife, so I got another SnG. Hopefully I'll keep this one, but it's a spear-point & not a tanto, like the other 2.

Good luck on what you pick.

GSW nothing was wrong with it, had Strider adjust the pivot cuz it was bouncing when closed. It was new condition after that worked better than new too.
