I've had the SnG for a short time now and we've been through a couple of adventures. (You've probably read the thread about the tip breaking off.)

Well, I still think it's a great knife but it has now developed a very minor but somewhat annoying "feature". When the knife is open you can grab the blade and it will move VERY slightly up and down. Certainly nowhere near enough to affect it's operation and there appears to be no danger of the lock failing or anything like that but the blade does have that slight movement. If I hold the lock in tightly the movement stops so I'm assuming the face of the lock does not exactly meet the rear of the blade.

It will be interesting to see if it gets worse or wears in and disappears.

It should wear in after awhile. In fact a few folders that I've owned will stop wiggling once you exerted some force on the blade.

im not 100% positive, but i think you can take it apart, and add a little more bend to the lockbar, and it will solve this problem. something you might could check into.

Mine have always gotten worse. I end up sending them all in for adjustment at some point. :(

ps. as far as taking them apart and re-bending the lockarm you shouldn't have to do that consistently with a knife that costs so much to my way of thinking. And good luck explaining that to the Striderguys when you break the lockarm. (they will still fix it but they may blow you some guff.)

just send it back to strider. they would be sick to their stomachs knowing that one of their knives out there wasn't functioning perfectly. they are some of the best guys in the knife business and fight very hard to earn their reputation.

You're right, I can send it back but, for me, that would be a last resort. Shipping costs are bad enough but going through customs with a knife can be a little tricky and I'd rather not chance it if I absolutely don't have to.

Probably what I'll do, if I can't easily fix it myself and if it gets any worse, I'll email the strider guys and see what they say.

Well, you may want to blow some guff back if that would be the case, somehting along the lines of "how come I paid so much for this and its not working properly?"

From what I can gather about the Strider folders they are like old British Sports cars, expensive and a PITA to get a reliable one, but people still rave about them and froth at the mouth at the mere mention of them not being much good.

My GB did the same thing and it gradually went away as the lockbar and tang broke in and seated completely.

Not to worry IMHO.

I've got a third-hand tanto SnG and no such problem ... it may have worn in by now, before I got it. Have you tried opening it a few times with a hard snap?

I tried a couple of those but didn't make much difference. I'm not really all that concerned about it at this point. Maybe it will wear in after a while. I may try adjusting the pivot screw if it starts to annoy me. You don't notice it when you're cutting, I only noticed it while I was fiddling with the knife while watching TV one night. I've sort of gotten into the habit of seeing how many different ways I can open and close it as a sort of background task. I'm sure there will be a lot of blood one day! :)

Any cheap knife, i guess, would get the chance to wear in, no matter. Any more expensive knife is graped and turned and whatever every evening and every f*****g change or difference to yesterday creates problems or even creates a bad stomack. I am fighting myself against this. @gajinoz, i am on your side. :D

Maybe someday i end up throwing all my high priced knifes away and buying some $15 knifes i will never care about as long as they stay open when locked and closed when unlocked.

I am not saying, that this thing here is normal or not. First of all i would say, use it further on and see. Maybe the bar is not moving over enough. But before doing your own, have a talk to Strider, that you are allowed to. Just because it is Strider doesn´t mean, that there can´t be the regular "wear in" "problems" as on any other Liner lock folder.

Well, Temper, In my experience and from what I read I do not gather that it's hard to find one that is reliable  .

I have two folders that are totally reliable and a buddy has one. So here in SA they are 100% reliable. :)

Odd, I have read a lot of complaints regarding fit and finish on these folders. In fact, I have read so many negative things about them I wouldn't consider owning one.

But I guess 3 is as good as any number as a control ;)

Sometimes this can be due to a loose blade or handle. Try tightening up the knife. Tighten the frame screws and gently tighten the pivot a hair. If it gets better, tighten the pivot a little more until you find the sweet spot.

Striders are just another brand that people who don't own them like to complain about.... like Sebenzas. sure, every now and then there might be a problem with one but you'll get only best service from the Strider Guys if thats the case. i've got an SNG and it's as close to perfect as any knife i've owned. lockup is like a vault. is it smooth and comfy? hell no! it's a strider! it's got rought G10 and raw Titanium. it bites back! and it performs. and i trust it implicitly. if you are looking for slick and smooth then buy a Mayo or an Onion... if you want the toughest knives on the planet buy a Strider. if you're looking for a knife to not own but constantly complain about then pick Strider... because everyone who owns one will silently understand that you're insane.

I have 24 Strider's and have had next to zero issues. Quality is great and I'll buy 24 more.

You go AJ.....

I have noticed no issues with either my GB or my new DDC SMF..... at the same time there seem to be lots of people telling me that they suck or they'er not pretty..... If I want a pretty knife then I will buy a Mayo or an Onion..... of course because my idea of pretty and the next guys are different I can say I did get a bad ass knife that the girls I work with all think it is "dead sexy" I didn't buy it for approval from any here or at my work place. But the knife is a badass useable knife that cuts and keeps on cutting.

Without wishing to get into what looks like it may become a slinging match, I would like to put this to you.

By your rationale if I buy a car with wooden seats and square wheels, but it starts every time I turn the key I have a good buy? No thanks, I'll stick with the Mercedes. :D
But then again, since I'm not a hard core operator I guess a Sebbie or Manix will have to do.

I would only ask how many of these are customs? I've never had a problem with a custom Strider, they are definitely the shi7. I have however had lockup issues with just about every production Strider framelock I've gotten. Say 4 out of six at least. And uneven grinds on roughly half. I would also say that the Strider Guys took care of it every time without fail although I may have had to send one back more than once for the same issue.

I love Strider designs and own a bunch but I couldn't in good conscience recommend them to anyone else because of the QC issues. I know what to expect and I like the designs and fixed product enough to send them in to get fixed but it's not for everyone. As Mick says, there's an a55 for every seat.

All that said the last Gen 2 SMF I picked up has a rock solid lockup, and I mean ROCK SOLID but the grind went a little screwy at the tip.

Again, I love Strider knives but I think some people are a little too fanatic about it to report truthfully about them. I'm not trying to slam Strider at all with what I'm saying, just reporting my personal experience with the ones, about 15 - 20 of them, that I've had. And like I said, when the Striderguys heard about my issues they immediately wanted to fix them and they did so without exception. All my keepers are perfect.

And what's usually in my pocket? A DDC double ground Tanto or that Gen 2 SMF with the super lockup. And before that it was a Gen 1 SMF.

oil

ps. I DO think they are sexy. I'm waiting for the Tanto SMF to come out.

i can see why you're a fan of the Sebenza... i owned one and it was a great knife (although the small was alittle too small for me). if it weren't for the SnG i think i'd have bought a large. but i discovered that the SnG was the Maybach to your Mercedes... not sure what the wood seats and square wheels were refering to... but if you are a fan of the Manix then i'm not sure what you could complain about with a Strider. but hey, it's just knives we're talking about. i'm glad you have the opportunity to carry whatever you want and you should excersize the right to do so. i only speak up because i don't get what's not to like about a Strider. i've got three and love them all. there nothing square or wood about that... just sharp and built like a tank.
