SNG Tanto or Umnumzaan Tanto..?

Hey Blowpop, I've owned both and believe you'd be better off with the CRK. I carry a 25 currently and it'll do anything that you could expect from a folding knife.

I have owned both (drop point, not tanto) at some point. I found that the CRK is much more purpose built for cutting and excels at this task, where as Strider takes a bit more of a brute force approach to things. Each has it's own merits though, and it is really up to you to decide what will fit your needs best. The SNG falls more on the "sharpened pry bar" side of the scale, but is a very usable knife. The Sebenza is much more of a slicer, and more of a finesse tool. I would need to consider what other gear I would likely have at my disposal to make a decision between the two, as both should be very capable of what you need.

I would keep two things in mind while deciding. CRK has no issues with you taking the knife apart to clean and lube, in fact they include the proper hex key and lube with each knife, Strider doesn't. If you are really out in the field using the knife in adverse conditions this might make a big difference when you get back to camp and have a chance to do some maintenance. Also as has already been mentioned Stirder seems to have more reports of QC related issues than CRK.

That said if I needed to pick one folder to be a do it all survive anything and still be useful as a tool no matter what I threw at it I would probably go with the SNG.

Strangely as fate would have it, I will no longer be choosing either one. I recieved a gift in the mail today from my grandmother who passed away last month, she was a second mother to me. It is the chris reeve ti lock. It is now my favorite and most special knife that I have. Ill be keeping it with me every where I go. It is the last knife I want to have recieved in the mail. Hold your loved ones close, you never know what tomorrow could bring.
Thank you guys for all the responces.

Strider. I have had the Unumzaan, and I would rather have a Strider Tanto.

What a cool lady! I'm sorry about your loss bud.
I only have one suggestion, get a cheaper knife for when you're on deployment just in case. I wouldn't want to possibly lose something like that with so much sentimental value.

Is the Umnum tanto tip robust?: How much steel is there at the Umnumzaan tanto tip? I havent been able to find a good picture. I would like to get one but wonder if it is tough enough for "light" prying and stabbing or if that might break the tip. A bunch of you guys here have the tanto, so what has been your experience with the Umnum tanto tip - pretty tough/hard to break, or not?

I've had several striders, never a tanto but several sng's and smf's. Now as far as a robust knife. There's no arguing the umnumzaan full titanium handle is stronger, vs striders g-10 titanium. Now take both and squeeze the handles together see which one flexes. I have a umnumzaan tanto in my pocket now and have been carrying it for a couple months now. Along with a strider smf love both, both are premium knives that can do pretty much any task within reason. I personally would choose the umnumzaan over the Strider. I've cut roofing, metal flashing, tar paper, wood plastic. I've opened beer bottles with the tip. I'm not sure why but the s30-v and his heat treat is just the best I've found. I can spend 4 minutes sharpening and be ready to push cut paper. It really does cut extremely well for a somewhat thick blade. I just love mine and will probably never part with it. That being said I'm on the lookout for a Strider tanto!
