I waited for the sleet to turn to rain this morning and then headed out. It was raining, windy and just pure nasty...perfect day for practicing fire skills !

All the wet weather meant lots of fast flowing water~

I spotted some Skunk Cabbage so I guess spring is just around the corner~

Lots of greenery~

My Tin pants laughed at the rain !!!

For my tinder today I chose Cedar Bark with some Balsam sap added. This is a great combo for wet, windy days and is in my opinion better than fatwood under these conditions !

I headed further along the Inlet~

As we stood on a little boat launch Snicker started to sniff around like crazy and began barking. I guessed it was Otters she could smell....this was confirmed shortly after !

This pic came out blurry as both Snicker and the Otter headed towards each very quickly and I knew this could end badly for my little dog. Luckily my shouting scared the Otter off as they were literally 2 feet from each other. Snicker was going to go in the water after it but I managed to shout her away !

Snicker been with you on so many hikes and she didn't pick up basic survival skills? (like don't go after food that can eat you)
Some good shots Pit.
Tell us more about your pants.

Not a lot to really tell buddy. They are Filson Single Tin Pants, super tough waxed cotton....pretty bomb proof !

Hi all,

pitdog, glad snickers is ok. Them river otters can really do some fighting when they want too.
Neat pics you posted.
your tinder sure took the sparks really well. I like seeing how that stuff lol. Even a little fire is so cool.

There isn't supposed to be any fires in most of the parks I visit so practicing starting one is about all I can do. In my neck of the woods once you manage to start one you have no problem getting it to grow as Fatwood and resin are everywhere !

Great pics, particularly number three. What camera and/or editing software did you use?

Thanks for the wilderness walk through and as always great pics. Where do you live Pit? Sure is beautiful.

I keep a close eye on my dog when we're around the beaver ponds near my place, on more than one occasion she's jumped in to give chase after the beaver slaps its tail in warning. That's certainly not a fight I'd want my dog to get into, especially in the water.

Great pics as usual bud:thumbup:

Are otters that mean? We don't have otters around here.

From what I've read they are not naturally very aggressive unless protecting their young. That being said if Snicker had initiated an attack I'm sure the Otter would have responded accordingly and if the fight had gone to the water there would only be one winner !

Any member of the weasel family is an all out a$$kicker and that looked like 30lbs or so. It could have gotten ugly, the size of their teeth to body is ridiculous.

Cheers for the snaps. Good to see you are all keeping safe...and that you have come to your senses with you choice of ferro rod! ;)

The picture of the inlet really caught my eye.

Thanks for the pics. Maisy and the TT always make some great pics to share with the nephew when he is over.

Otters and Racoons have a big advantage over a dog in the water. Good thing she did not make the dash.

Ok, I haven't said this until now but, every time I see a thread of yours I instantly click on it. To say the least, I love your threads! (I used to have a dog that looks just like Snicker too :))

I also have to compliment you on your pants my friend, I am jealous. Looks like a good time, I am glad Snicker is alright

Thank you for sharing!
