Snody Knives

I don't own one now, but I did. It was a Kozuka and it was beautifully made, and came about as sharp as any knife I have owned. I also very much like Mike and Michelle.

I own 2 folders by Mike and the F/F is excellent and the knives themselves are tanks. I also really like the Hybrid handle, although it doesn't look comfy, it is.

Here's a terrible pic:

Man I hope this doesn't turn in to another visit SnodyLand thread:jerkit: :D

Beauties...I only have the BM 425 and 426.
I hate to ask how much you paid for the pair.

Prices directly from Mike are very reasonable but I'm not sure if he's taking orders currently. I picked mine up from NCBlades IIRC and Michael doesn't mark them up as high as other dealers so they weren't all that bad pricewise although I've seen other dealers go quite a bit higher. Mine were in the $650 (Hybrid) - $800 (Damascus Hybrid/Resistor) range IIRC.

Oh ya, ps. I've got a 425 too. That's what lead me to the Hybrid in the first place as it's one of BMs best models.

Wow thanks for the great contribution to this thread. You could consider this Trolling

Mike builds some solid stuff, with a ever changing line up. I hope to get a knife from him sometime in the future.

I have always liked Mike a lot. I have never heard of a customer having a bad deal with him EVER. If his style of knife is your style of knife, go for it.

I've owned several folders by Mike (still have one), and I definitely am impressed with them. The fit and finish and build quality of his work is definitely in the top echelon of tactical/utility knives. I would certainly buy more if I had the opportunity.

Mike's knives are extremely well built, and are a great value. On top of that Mike is a great guy, one I'm proud to call my friend.

Thanks Guys.

I appreciate the comments.

Here are a few pictures of some recent work.

Thanks Everyone!!

I couldnt agree with you more. Mike's karambit is badass. It fits your hand like a glove. I hope to one day get a large fixed blade from him, like the one he used in the Youtube video. That would be S-W-E-E-T!!!!!!!!

Here is something I posted elsewhere regarding my position on orders.

It is a Very Long Explanation but I really wanted to break everything down for my friends and clients.

This year marks my 8th year as a knifemaker/cutler and as I sit in the Compound this morning and reflect on those years past I feel compelled to explain the Future Direction of SnodyKnives to my many friends and clients here in SnodyLand.

When I started setting up at shows 1999 the knifemaking business was Much Different. Every Knifemaker I met accepted orders. Some had a 6 month backlog and some had a six year backlog. Knifemakers were producing print catalouges and maintaining an open order policy regardless of their backlog. In fact I remember how impressed I was when certain knifemakers would state that they had a multi-year backlog. The magazines jumped all over that stuff. "If you want a knife from John X be prepared to wait because the demand has created a seven year backlog"

It was most certainly a Staus Symbol in the industry to "Have a five year backlog"

Wow!! What security!! What a great deal!! If I work hard maybe someday I can have a "Five Year Backlog" and all they great things that go along with it!!!

Fast Forward about a year and the Internet is Exploding!!!!!

Knife Forums, Knifemaker Websites, Knife Purveyors, Virtual Knife Shows, Knifemaking Communities, Online Knife Magazines, etc, etc, etc!!!

The internet was on fire and any knifemaker who had a decent website was hooked up like a sled dog. Seriously just about any knifemaker who had a cool site was completely covered up in work.

I had an article come out that year and in one weekend my backlog went from 6 months to well over 5 years!! In one night (Saturday) I received over 170 orders. Many of these orders were for multiple knives in fact one order alone was for 148 pieces and eventually increased to 172 individual knives and sheaths!!

Man I was on top of the World!!! Seriously it was just overwhelming!!!

Article after article hitting the stands!!! Frigging phone ringing 24/7!!
Sky Marshalls are carrying the Janich/Snody Ronin!! Secret Service Agents Ordering Folders// Dea needs knives!! People sending envelopes full of hundred dollar bills!!! Absolute Insanity!!

Fast Forward a couple years!!!

The Internet is Saturated with Knifemakers and the Thinning has begun!!!

All the guys who had the nice websites and crummy knives are now on their way out. Most of you remember some of the Legends of the day
Blade, Corkum, Griffith and many, many more who were ultimately ousted as frauds.

The internet continued to become more saturated and much more competitive for knifemakers with new talent popping up daily.
New designs, new materials, new methods all showing up live on the internet at a blinding rate!! The internet began to have a Direct Negative Impact on traditional retail stores as well as knife show attendance. Many clients began realizing they can purchase their dream knife on the internet and forego the $1000.00 plus expense of travelling to a show.

At this point I am so deep in orders that I cant see light!! I have suspended taking new orders yet I still receive money in envelopes, checks, email orders and multiple phone calls daily. I send money and checks back to people, I respond to dozens of emails daily saying "thank you but I am not taking orders" I answer the phone several times a day to say "thanks but I am not taking orders" I attend knife shows and sell out in 10 minutes then spend two days telling friends and clients "sorry not taking orders"

I discover new methods of knifemaking and new materials that I want to explore but I am working on an order for 172 Carolina Skinners with identical wood handles. Three years into the process I am building orders that are four years old. I continue to get further behind because I keep accepting "special orders". Many individuals become frustrated while waiting five years for a knife that was promised in three and rightfully so. Some individuals just go NUTS and leave multiple messages screaming and cussing even though I did not accept their deposits or have any of their money.

I respond to emails over a five year period providing status, excuses, explaining why I am behind, accepting modifications to old orders, handle changes, blade an inch longer, etc, etc, etc,

The knife order that was placed in 2001 is now nearly five years old.
Lets say for argumnents sake that the actual knife requires 10 hours labor to complete. I now have close to 10 hours of correspondence associated with the piece and I havent even started it yet. In fact I just fell another month behind because I have to move to a different state and set up a new shop.

Now a second Thinning is taking place, this time its not the scam artist knifemaker.

This time its the Honest Knifemaker who is swamped in three to five year old orders. He quoted prices when the orders were placed and he intends to honor those prices. The problem is fuel costs have nearly doubled, Material Costs in many cases have increased 300 percent, rent is up, insurance is up, health care is up, machinery costs and consumables are up 30 to 40% and homie is working seven days a week digging himself in deeper and deeper with each knife he completes.

The market has completely changed but homie is still building 2001 patterns with ivory micarta handles because he got 200 orders for them after his article ran in Blade Magazine.

He sadly announces on his favorite knifemaking forum that he is going out of business.

He lost his ass and now he is working in Walmart!!!

I have been a fulltime knifemaker for the past four years.

My entire income is 100% knife related and my shop is open to the public.

I have struggled with taking orders, suspending orders, taking orders, suspending orders and I have come to the conclusion that it is impossible for me to manage a succesful operation while adhering to the "business model" of knifemaker who accepts orders.

I am a generally anti social individual and I am very private regarding my decisions in life.

I am sharing my position on this subject in SnodyLand because you guys are the lifeblood of my operation. It is very important to me that my friends and clients understand my logic and why I have made the decision to go forward in a New Direction.

Knifemaking is not optional for me, its not a hobby or a craft or even a passion.

Knifemaking is my Life, I work seven days a week and when I get home in the evenings I am thinking about getting back to the shop.

Its not a passion its an absolute obsession for me!!!

I have to provide for my family and knifemaking is my only means to an end.

The past four years have clearly demsontrated to me that the "knifemakers business model" of taking orders and maintaining a multi-year backlog is antiquated and no longer an acceptable method for SnodyKnives to employ.

I have never accepted deposits and most peoples lives change over a Five Year Period. When you get that Skinner with Mastadon Ivory and the Frog Sheath finished and find out that Mr Jones(who waited five years) just got a divorce and is homeless that opens up a whole other issue. What do you do with all the people who back out of an order?? I certainly dont blame anyone because Lord Knows I have had my share of bad luck but how do you manage this issue and operate a profitable business. Personally I would rather just forget the whole "order fiasco knifemaker business model" and sell them when they are finished. That way if a client has the money he can get the piece within a week. He can get it while he is still excited not five years later after his Ex put him in the poor house.

Its important to me that everyone understand this decision is not about making my life easier, or simplifying my books or trying to be some elite knifemaker who does not have to accept orders.

The decision to never again accept orders is about survival for SnodyKnives.

SnodyKnives is not going away in fact with the help of my many friends and clients we are getting stronger by the day.

Google "Snody" sometime and you can see exactly the effect my clients across the world have had regarding the "Snody" brand.

I operate on a limited budget regarding the 'toys' I purchase and I have to know that they will maintain their value over the long haul.

I like to be able to sell my toys and buy new toys with the money and its also nice to know that in the event of an emergency you can turn your toys into cash.

The future of SnodyKnives is not only important to my family its important to the thousands of clients who own my knives and may one day need to flip something and thats why I work daily to increase the recognition of the "Snody" brand.

SnodyKnives will move forward with small limited batches of collectible, modern, high performance knives that will be offered for sale only after they have been completed and are ready to ship.

I will use SnodyLand to preview each of these Limited Batches.

We will maintain a Notification List and contact individuals when a model they are interested is being constructed.

When a new material shows up on the market I will be able to immediately incorporate it into my designs. I will constantly introduce new patterns and designs that I feel reflect current advancements in materials and technology. I am talking about New Designs Weekly, not every couple of years.

I will post each batch of New Knives in the very early stages of construction. If you see something you like please pm or sound off in the thread and we will take care of the rest.

My output this year will increase but I will only produce very limited batches of exclusive models. I will rotate between batches of folders and fixed blades.

I am not going to screw over my friends and clients and mass produce any given model which would saturate the market and affect the resale of their collection.

I have an obligation to every individual who purchases a Snody Knife to work hard and continue to promote the "Snody" brand and insure that their knife will hold its value in the aftermarket.

I am proud of the fact that when you buy a SnodyKnife you can sell it at a profit if times get hard. My knives have steadily increased in value for the past 8 years and by limiting the number I produce they will continue to resale for much more than when they were originally purchased.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for Supporting SnodyKnives!!!
