I've just ordered a GB Small Forest Axe after being disappointed with a Wetterlings Large Hunter's Axe. The Wetterlings fit and finish is superb, but unlike my two other Wetterlings, this one seems to nick at the slightest provocation. (Maybe it missed heat treat?)

Anyway, I've been reading about the Snow and Nealley Kindling axe and wonder if it would have been a wiser choice for me since I live and play in Michigan's Upper Penninsula (with maple, oak, and birch as well as softwoods). Anybody had experience with the S&N? Does the edge hold up well? What about that goofy knob on the end of the handle?

I have both. The GB forest's head is a little smaller and GB has a longer handle. Both have served me well. On the SN kindling I took the end of the handle down a little but not much....

Well, mogwai, there I go again, shooting off my "mouth" before asking the obvious question (i.e. "what's its purpose?") Thanks for educating me.

I've got the Pen Bay, and it's a great little axe, IMO.

I like the knob at the end. When using one handed, I put my ring finger just above the knob, and it gives a great grip. If I need to use two hands, I put the second hand on the knob, the other just above it, again, great grip. It may look funny, but it really works.
