Snow bound scout knife.

I must have been ten or eleven. I was walking home from school, through a strip of woodland and across a frozen creek. Turned out the ice wasn’t as thick as I thought. That was one cold bath.

This could have been an adventurous story. I had a pocket knife. I had a match safe. I could have built a fire, warmed up, dried out.

But I was within a mile of home. I figured the time I’d take gathering wood, making a fire, warming up, drying my clothes…in that same time I could walk a mile. It was a chilly hike, but not a dangerous one. Central heating and a hot bath warms you better than a campfire.

Another captivating story, Carl. You continue to bring us right in to the events, as though we were sitting right there cooking our own hot dogs with you.

Excellent!

I had a few "Bobby" moments myself when I was younger lol. Another good one Carl. Thanks for taking us back for awhile

Great story Carl. We had a creek at the bottom of out best hill too.....I've been in it a few times.
These experiences are good teachers.

Boy am I glad you found this story! Carl wrote a great one. I am sitting inside this morning watching a light snowfall, remembering similar tales from years ago when I was a Scout. I’ve been carrying a pocket knife every day for more than fifty years, always sharp like my scoutmaster taught us, and I loved every word of Carl’s story.

That was a great story!!! From hearing about the things my dad did as a kid in the 50's, it seemed like a absolutely great time to be a kid.

Do you still have your scout knife?

I'm not sure I was a member yet when this story was posted but it was a good read.
Sadly I was neither in the scouts nor have I seen more than 3 snowfalls each being completely melted within a 24hr period so I've never had the chance to ride a sled once in my almost 25 years.

It instantly brought this picture to mind.

It’s worth a road trip some time. It’ll make you feel like a kid for sure:thumbsup:

Went and played in the snow some once when I was a kid, but it was an impromptu spur of the moment thing where I didn't have a jacket and we didn't even think we'd be passing any snow on the way.

Honestly I can't stand that crunch sound you get with walking in the snow, it makes me cringe, I guess I'd have to wear earplugs.
