My buddy Moose (not the Becker Moose, but the good looking Moose
) I packed everything but the kitchen sink in my Kelty Redwing 3100 and let's see I used a water bottle, the Izula and the ESEE fire kit. I took the 6 with the scales off the 5 and Izula (it was hard leaving the 4 at home, never done that before!) Didn't even get the 6 out for any knife pron. Man I should really start packing lighter. But as they say, better to have it and not need it....
We hit the trail and while we didn't see any people, a lazy rabbit had blazed the trail for us.
This coyote must have messed with the wrong rabbit. Moose wanted nothing to do with him, go figure.
Hey Dad, ya see that tinder up there?
I scraped off some of the very loose stuff from the sunny side of the tree with my new Izula (thank you again Jeff). I stuck it in my jacket pocket to try and dry it out with my body heat a bit.
We took a water break and took in the scenery for a minute.
Fire is 95% preparation and 5% combustion. And patience is a virtue! I had PJ cotton balls in the fire kit as a backup in case I needed them.
No better feeling than a warm fire on your face on a cold day. It took about twice as long as necessary since a certain 9 month old 4-legged boy kept carrying my kindling off while I collected more.
Beats the hell out of a day at the office.
