We live right on the border and here's what we got yesterday. Probably won't be much moving on our road today because our road is the last one the snow plow gets to. Its 12 degrees here and the high is supposed to be 28. Very fortunate we could be in Colorada.

When it gets cold in GA- it's a problem. Buildings aren't designed for it, drivers don't know how to adjust to it, cities aren't prepared for it. This morning on the way to work, the main drag in Atlanta was a sheet of black ice. It was a crash-em-up derby of luxury SUV's!:D Made my heart sing. :)

We only had a few very very light white patches. Not as great as last March. I knew we weren't going to get much. Atlanta from what I've heard got a bit more and things were a little more treacherous. Granted it's Georgia. When it snows and/or ice's up noone knows how to drive in it.

Believe it or not that happens here as well, and we are use to snow and ice.

Some people think they're invinceable in their SUV's cause they can get through thick snow and slippery ice; but when it comes to stopping.......

I've noticed that SUV's are probably the WORST handling cars on the road when it comes to ice. High centers of gravity, lots of inertia- not to mention the smug-ass drivers. When I lived in DC I used to see lots of SUV's in the ditch every winter.

This morning I toodled right past several accidents involving Chevy Tahoes and Range Rovers etc. in my little Scion XB. Traction control and ABS worked like a champ! I learned how to drive in Iowa, where folks know a thing or two about snow. Here- it's like everyone thinks they've been transported to an alien planet, where the laws of physics have somehow changed whenever it flurries. It's great fun, unless you find yourself in the path of some rapper jabbering on his cellphone, rollin' on 22's in his H2 who decides to jam on the brakes in an intersection.

Yea I'm a native Atlantan & can't drive well in snow. Dealt with it a bit more while at Ft. Campbell & got marginally better. Of course I realize my limitations & take it easy.

I drive from Calhoun to Marietta for work so I just called my boss (also my good friend) this morning & said I'd be in on Monday. Gordon County was advising people to stay home this morning if they could as the overpasses & highway ramps were sheets of ice. Just got in from having a snowball fight with the family.

Driving in the snow/ice is all about going slow, lots of time and distance for braking and maintaining good distance between cars....and not going out unless ya gotta! Especialy if you don't have even an all season tire...

Hope your kids are having fun in it!

It's all relative, I suppose. We've only had snow once in recorded history here in San Diego, so no worries about that. The odd thing is, since we don't get much rain, either, people are unprepared for it when we do get some. It's dry here, and oil and rubber accumulate on the surface of the roads. As soon as it does rain, all that oil and rubber float to the surface and act like ice, and people here don't know how to drive on slick roads. There are cars spinning out and ending up in ditches all over the place, just because of a little rain. I shudder to think what would happen if we ever got real ice like you guys get.

I'm in Cartersville, GA and was driving through Emerson to get to I-75 and hit a few slick patches when going into some corners, but other than that it was smooth sailing.

ARMAGEDDON!!!!

The snowstorm in March of 1993 shut down roads everywhere. Friend of mine jumped in his buddy's Jeep Wrangler & went tooling around. They set up beach chairs & a umbrella in the middle of the highway & had a beer. Can't remember the highway, but it would of been near their place in Roswell. That weekend was suppose to be my going away party for the Army - no one made it. My roommate & I walked down Powder Springs Rd to the liquor store & movie store, both amazingly open, and got stocked up on booze & movies for the weekend inside.

sounds like in your case it was more like

ARMAGETDOWN

I think one of the biggest problem is that cities and state agencies are not prepared to handle the not so common cold weather in the south. Over here we usually have Plow and salt/sand trucks ready to roll before the storm gets close. It is very rare a highway completely ices over up here..

dawsonbob - Yup, we started up a fire in the fireplace, mixed up some drinks & proceeded to watch action flicks & play Madden football on the Sega.

tonym - Most of Ga. (except for some mountain areas) are not set up for heavy snow & ice. Most of the highways are kept decent, but all the side roads are at the whim of whatever the county has. My little rear-wheel drive truck would of ended up in a ditch if I tried to head out this morning.
