Looking for a general purpose camp axe. Granfors Bruks are a little more than I want to spend right now. The S&N and Wetterlings ones seem to be in about the same price range. I have heard people recommend both of these. If you could only have one or the other, which one? And why?

Thanks for the help!

I have one of each, and I would say go with whatever style you prefer!

If you buy a S&N, I would highly recommend dropping the extra coin and picking up a modified one from offthemapoutfitters.com -Otherwise be prepared to do some heavy filing to get the cutting edge into good shape initially. Apart from that, they are great axes.

I understand that Wetterlings have increased their quality slightly since coming under new ownership, slightly boosting their prices. I think you may find that the Wetterling axes come with a better cutting edge straight from the factory. Their handles are untreated, so I suggest a heavy coating in linseed oil.

I think it's hard to go wrong with either.

I think it would depend on your ability to modify them. Off the shelf, wetterlings are usually pretty good. An off-the-shelf snow and nealy is liable to have a thick edge. If you have the means to thin out the edge apropriatly, I think you could get it to perform about the same as the wetterlings. So, it might just come down to which one you like the look of more.

ETA- everthing up there^ is essentially the same as what simon said, so I thought maybe I should contribute a little more. Another consideration might be the sheaths, the wetterlings comes with a much nicer one. Also, +1 on the off the map outfitters reccomendation.

Norlund is another good option. If you are looking for just a stepping stone til you can afford a GB, the Fiskars hatchets will last you years. The Finns have been doing rough use tools for centuries, and Fiskars is no exception. Plus they're 20 bucks to boot.

I will probably go with the Wetterlings for now. I looked at the modified S&N and it looks AWESOME......the only problem is the cost with shipping puts it closer to the Gransfors price range.

I found a Wetterlings Axe on ebay for $50 new. Free shipping. I will probably go with that.
