I have a large supply of snowplow wear edge that i want to use for forging blades. does anyone know what steel is tipically used for these? I am thinking that i was told 5160, but i have had them for so long i can't remember. anyone try using these before?

yuddit,
I'm a full time equipment operator with the Montana Air Guard, and am the one ordering all the replacement edges for our snow plows, The edges for pickup truck sized plows are made of 1050. Once you get into the large equipment (graders, backhoes, dozers), the edges are made of 1045. There are also edges made of 1070 for concrete and asphalt work, but have never seen any of 5160.

Thanks Ed, I appreciate the reply. I wonder how good 1050 would be to forge with? Thanks again.

Excellent to forge! This type of steel is great for impact type applications like camp blades, axes, hatchets, things like that. Harden as normal (at critical, and quench in pre-heated oil) Tempering range should be in the 300 to 400 range. If your looking for something that makes for a good temper line on a differentially hardened blade, this is the stuff to use.
