So...1000 Posts Brusletto Knives Giveaway - Winner!

20 years ago I was rocking a Buck Cross Lock if I remember correctly. I got one when they first came out. One hand opening, and locking we thought it was so cool.

For fixed blades, I had a WW1 bayonet I still have that sucker after two decades of throwing.

I also, by that age, had my first custom knife.

Bought with lawn mowing money, made by my own Uncle.

I am pleased to share memories with other members. A knife of the quality of your Bruslettos would be a nice prize.

Twenty years ago, I was a science instructor for a teacher training college in Papua New Guinea (Eastern Highlands). We prepared national students from Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands to teach in the public high schools of their countries. As a classsroom teacher, my primary uses for a knife were opening mail, cutting open cardboard boxes, cutting string to length and cutting rubber tubing for Bunsen burners. My Schrade single-blade lockback with a black plastic handle was light, easy to carry and always in my pocket. A Victorinox Spartan in a pouch on my belt provided backup.

Hardly an everyday carry item for a bookworm schoolteacher in a small college town, my other knife was a 14 inch machete with a sheath by Tramontina of Brazil. Purchased locally for approximately US$5 (or the equivalent in PNG "kina"), this inexpensive tool was my gardening and bushwalking mainstay while I was in the country. Fortunately, I had used bush knives before while a Peace Corps Volunteer in Samoa. Otherwise, I would have provided amusement to all the students when they showed me how to sharpen and use an implement they had been using since six years of age.

Though I have yet to return, I remember fondly the people of PNG and my time there.

I was about to graduate from college, my EDC would be a kamikaze korean made balisong with handle replaced with brass and / or bigger 5" blade korean balisong. Those were the days ;)

Today's EDC: Resilence, Navy k631 and Sanrenmu 763.

Thanks for the chance! If I win, Tollekniv is my choice. I'll send you the coins from this country ..

Well twenty years ago was when i got my first knife! My father had let me use some of his knives and had given up a few cheapos for me to beat up on before but now that i was 9 i thought it was time for me to have my very own. It was easy for me to decide what kind of knife i wanted, after all it was the early 90s and MacGyver was still on daily and as all of you who remember that show know he could do anything with that SAK of his. Of course my parents weren't in the habit of just buying me things like that for the heck of it so i decided to go ahead and plant the seed in June, after my birthday, that i was now old enough for my very own pocket knife and that i wanted the one that MacGyver uses!
As the months passed I did the classic childhood hint dropping that you always feel is sure to drive your parents in the direction of the present you really want and when my cousin(three months younger!!!) got one for his birthday I knew for sure that I would have one come Christmas time. Well when Christmas finally came around, taking about 5 years to get there as it always seemed to when youre young, I did my usual flight downstairs to tear into my pile of presents. Shirts, pants, socks, jackets, even a bow and arrow set but no knife! As the pile dwindled hope was fading and when the last package was opened I still had no knife!
The family slowly migrated back to the kitchen to start getting breakfast together and i was double checking to make sure i had left no gift unwrapped. With no boxes left to open and biscuits calling me away to the kitchen i just gave up on it. I ate breakfast and went to check out and play with my other new stuff like you do and when i got back downstairs i suddenly remembered THE STOCKING!!! a took the last four stairs in a single bound and grabbed the stocking from its place on the mantle and dumped its contents on the floor, candy, candy, more candy and then at the bottom jammed all the way in a package.... it was my very own Swiss Army Knife! just like Mac! and of course I immediately tore the packaging away and went to show it off!!! and of course later that day while breaking my new beauty in i managed to cut the hell out of my finger and still bare the scar to this day.
That knife was with me everyday(when i wasnt at school) and i used it for everything. If i had to guess i would say that that little knife probably helped construct about 20 different forts in the woods and carved up untold numbers of walking sticks in the roughly 5 years that it was my only knife and i still have it though it has been retired in pretty rough shape.
Hope this wasnt too long winded,
Brian

Ok, I'm in, first off Congrats on the milestone, interestin' knives, kinda Mora like, which is great as I don't believe I have this style yet so thanks for the chance to win one,

20 years ago I had just moved into my new home, A mobile home we had put on 7 1/2 acres of beautiful pasture land with a beautiful creek runnin' through the middle of the yard, trails through my woods and the thing I cherished 3rd most in my life, privacy.

My daughter had been born a year earlier, my 2nd most cherished thing and with my wife, my 1st most cherished thing we began our family life in the woods of NEPA.

I was workin' as an instructor in the Semiconductor industry travelin' 'round the world teachin' safety courses and classes on how to install and maintain out Wet Benches.

Back then ya could still carry a knife on a plane, and the knife I usually carried on board was a Spyderco Co-Pilot and taken apart tucked into my leather organizer or my computer bag was a Buck Titanium 186 lockback.

Back then I was into more tactical knives but I always had a traditional with me to, back then it was usually a Schrade Trapper.

My addiction to knives was just findin' it's stride, had a good job that paid well and access to the entire world to check every cultures version of EDC knives, life was great then in the mid to late 90s the company I worked for went bankrupt and I got laid off so my knife accumulatin' ability withered with the availabilty of funds.

Fast forward 20 years or so and I'm now semiretired due to work related injuries over those last 20+ years and I'm here on the forums tryin' to give back to the community that has kept me informed and entertained almost since this site came on line.

There is a wealth of knowledge and experience here that can not be mached anywhere else so here's lookin' ahead to your next postin' milestone

Ok, I'm in, first off Congrats on the milestone

Thanks a lot. It's taken me a while to get here! :) Also thanks for your memories :)

Bit of a coincidence, I just happen to have these two to hand (hastily taken pic). The Co-Pilot was a favourite EDC in the early 90's. The Buck Titanium 560 is mint.

Good luck

some nice stories here. Alot of us started this knife craze off on SAKs. Like we have mentioned they are the perfect companion for a kid in the woods.
Tahts: that pal is awesome i agree leave the age on it. It gives the knife context

I'm going to close this at 4.00pm GMT on the 6th October. If you've posted, make sure you've fulfilled the conditions of entry, as highlighted in the first post. I'll forward the qualifying entries to Esav, and the post numbers will go into the 'random number generator thing' at a time that's convenient to him. The chosen poster will pick the winning post (assuming the conditions of entry are met). Good luck everyone again, great stories and thanks for sharing them.

I'll be closing this later today. Good luck everyone.

Twenty years ago I was commuting to work in Siberia. I had a Kabar trapper that I had got in a trade and I carried it on every airplane that I rode on. I guess that things have changed since then but I am not sure it is for the better.

Thanks for your post Zidefelts. That's the last one. Good luck again everyone :)

Thanks for the chance, count me in please.
Fun to read all these stories.
I was 21 and studying architecture.
My edc back then was a Victorinox Huntsman, it still sees lots of pockettime.
I got it from my dad when I was younger, and as my dad recently passed this knife has become more precious to me since.

I was 6 months old at the time. If I had an edc, it probably was a pacifier. I've been lurking on bladeforums for quite a while, but I think this is my first post.

I was about 16 then and used to go to the local knife store and fantasise about a Buck 184 they had in their display.

I visited that knife for at least 3 years every week.

I had a vitorinox with a single blade. I loved it it was a great little knife. I wasn't doing a whole lot with it but was fine with me at the time.

Hello everyone, I originally asked Esav to do the 'random number generator thing', he kindly agreed, but he's currently having computer problems. I've therefore fed all the qualifying posts into a random number generator at Random.org and the post number drawn is POST NUMBER 21. This means that 'Bigfattyt' gets to pick the winning post from those that qualify. PM to 'Bigfattyt' shortly. More later....

:cool:Thanks very much for starting this contest. It is interesting to read the responses, some of which would do very well in a literature competition.

Those of us who do not succeed in winning a prize should at least eat some "Yorkshire Pudding" as a way of thanking Jack Black. Can he post a recipe?
