So about dem watches...

The manufacturers say that you should have the watch serviced every 4 years or so. Generally this costs less than a few hundred dollars. Rolex makes it hard to get done cheaply so it costs more like $400.

A lot of people say that you should wait until the watch acts up until it gets serviced. That could be 20 years or more.

Hamiltons are made by the same company that owns Omega, Swatch, and they use a lot of the same movements only with less things done to them.

didnt know that about the hamiltons, thx for the info. ive always liked the simplicity and elegance of a nice analog.

I have a Hamilton khaki automatic. It's a nice watch and my first mechanical. I think they are a great choice for someone's first auto. They're very good quality wise, and they don't cost all that much. The Hamilton line is a good option for those that are not sure they like mechanicals, but want a nice watch to try out.

Plus, Jessica Alba wears a Hamilton in the Fantastic Four.

I've got three automatics - an Invicta Ocean Ghost II, a Fossil Aut-O-Matic, and a Zodiac ZO8000. Actually, all three have surprised me with their ability to keep remarkably accurate time. I'd recommend the Zodiac to you for its toughness, solid construction, and good looks (it's a dive design, but not a clone of anything, in my book), but it's about 3mm too big for your requirements.

That said, I'd recommend one of the Seiko auto divers. If individuality is what you're after, pick up a black (or orange) Monster. Awesome looks, rock-solid construction, and quite unique without raising eyebrows. Those Seiko movements are really well-built.

Iv worn a Tag-heuer every day for many years now and they are great watches, iv never had any problems and it still looks great. Tag dont have the pompus reputation of rolex but are easily just as good if not better. (not trying to pick a fight just my oppinion) But as iv read here already, watches are very much a personal thing. I like knowing i have a tag on my wrist even if no one els does. i suppose knives are the same ? it just depends on how much paper you want to throw at it.
I use a luminox for rough and tumble though as i dont think i can bare paying for a Tag again !!!

Everyone knows Rolex... and, when they see someone wearing one, they assume it's a fake because 99.95% of them are... even O.J. Simpson wears one.
---snip--
A watch is a small thing that very few people will ever look at close up, so it's a private thing.

Two work experiences. I colleague wore a Rolex. One day I made the comment that "those fake Rolexes are pretty good these days". His face instantly told me his was fake. After that I always wanted to play poker with him but he was never that keen.

Another colleague I noticed wearing different watches, all of them nice ones - I asked him how many he had - his reply was that he had been meaning to ask me the same question. Nobody had asked him before. Spotted someone else with an enthusiasm though mine are nowhere near as rare or interesting as some of his.

zero..... just in ref to your iphone comments.... i am a hard user of everything, my wife loves busse cause i dont f them up...so i actually spend less on knives lol... anyway back to my point.... with a good case the iphone has proven itself to be pretty tough.....

for the money it is tough to beat the offerings from citizen or seiko. they offer good quality and tons of variety in the style dept. many models can handle the knocks of EDC with no problem. as your spending limit increases so do your options just remember diminishing returns. you spend alot to get a little.

if you are looking in the Omega range check out Tag, Tutima, Stowa, and Sinn Stowa and Sinn are german companies. there are many German brands that offer good watches a good prices and they are everybit as good as swiss offerings.

my personal preference is for the Seiko 5 models which use the workhorse 7S26 mvt which has been made since around 500bc. As far as maintaining them for what they cost just wear it for about 10 years and then buy another one. Some seiko dive watches use the same mvt and are pretty much bulletproof. But the fact is that a Casio G shock will still be more accurate than an omega, seiko or rolex auto costing 50 times it's price. later, ahgar

for that kinda dollar i can think of a lot of other stuff i would prefer, a slightly used rolex or pan would be 2 right off the top of my head,

honestly, if i was offered one of those, a seiko orange monster, or a marathon auto, with price not being a consideration, it would be #3 lol, imho the monster and the marathon are both better looking watches and are 1/3 the price, or less.

I own a Seiko 5. It gains about 5 seconds a day and runs like a top.

Try a Tag Heuer Aquaracer auto. They can be had for approx $1100 new. I wore one for 2 years before upgrading to a Rolex. My first auto was a Seiko 200m diver I bought at the PX before going to Iraq.

Matt,

You do realize this thread is three years old, right?

Try looking at a Longines or Ball watches, they are usually cheaper than Omega.

BTW I purchased my Seamaster new, for around $1500.

Basically what you need to know is this:

Almost every automatic besides rolex, unless otherwise advertised, is an ETA/Valjoux movement. Watch companies used to have distinct movements...but then there was a huge combining of swiss companies during the 70s. The two remaining giants for movements were ETA and Valjoux. Now there is just ETA, which is owned by swatch. Swatch also owns omega, longines, and a ton of other brands. Starting this year, swatch will no longer be selling movements to other companies.

So basically right now, if you buy pretty much any watch under $5000 (and many that are even more expensive) you will be buying an ETA/Swatch movement. So basically, the price you pay is depending on name, materials used in the case/bracelet (gold, etc) and craftsmanship. The movement will be the same.
