Got mine in today's mail and glanced through it and did a double-take: A 25 pc. limited edition Nyala with Tamboti scales - looks pretty good!
I'm quite fond of micarta as a handle material and it's no doubt a better choice as far as practicality goes, but I do think that wood suits the style of the knife better than the original brown micarta handle. The difference is subtle in the picture but I bet in the hand it's more noticable.
It's an interesting idea. The Tamboti probably machines a lot like Micarta or other synthetics - I've never worked with Tamboti but a lot of those tropical hardwoods are really dense, like G10 or Micarta...and some are more toxic to breathe. CRK has an eye for wood. These could be striking. Wonder what it would look like in mammoth bark ivory?
I love wood but I am always scared of using a knife that has wood handles. They can get wet causing them to swell, contract and crack. Eventually they will just break.
Well, for starters, it says "Idaho Made" - my Micarta Nyala doesn't. Beyond that, it's very nice. Probably less bullet-proof in the field...but it's warmer and better looking. I really like Micarta, but hardwoods have a charm all their own. To be honest I looked at the number available (25!), figured the price wasn't all that much higher than the regular Nyala (about 20% doing the math in my head before coffee) and figured I'd order one on spec, as it were.
