Would you consider all the major purveyors who come to most of the shows experts? One person will never know everything about all areas of knives. Many know knives from a specific time frame very well. IMO many (but not all) 'experts' are not really following the work of modern and new makers.
I dont think the term 'expert' can be overly analyzed. Some may be experts on knowing alot of different makers and prices. Some may be experts on metalurgy or blade geometry. Some will be experts on actual function with experience in using the knives, such as Les (and I know he is in the other areas too). I guess my point is that there are all kinds of experts, just like there are all kinds of people, and no one expert will have all of the same things to say.
Maybe an expert is someone who can help YOU out with YOUR specific questions/needs.
