So called "Knife People" these days...

The funny thing is, the rockhead was right in a way. If opening holes, studs, discs and other one hand opening devices had been around when they banned switchblades and gravity knives, they would have been banned as well because the intent of Congress was not to ban springs, it was to ban folding pocketknives that you could open with one hand, that's why they also banned gravity knives at the time.

Of course, he was wrong about getting arrested for one although I am sure some people have and it was quietly thrown out of court.

Something was recently before congress to ban AO's. They chose not to. Lemme check and find the article when I get home. Was in the NRA rag I think.

I think this happens in all things. I've lost count of the number ofmorons telling me shit like " dude you need to get a real lens for that camera, this 75to300 tamron Plastech POS was only 80 bucks ! It'll get so much closer than that little thing you got on there" I smile, look at them, and tell them to follow me. I go inside someplace dark, and snap a photo. " 50mm f1.4". And I walk away as they sit dumbfounded and try to get a shot

Beer. Dear god. The stories of loudmouths and "real beer". Yes Sam Adams is very nice...but please stop calling it a microbrew, and please stop treating it like one. You are not enlightened because you drink something that's in every gas station in the country.

Was camping and some idiot said something about my set of "steak knives". I quietly walked over, grabbed a log, and batoned it with my rc6 on the picnic table. I don't think he'd ever seen that before.

but I love my izula and I want to carry it!

Whoa! I didn't think it was that bad in Sweden. I can legally carry something up to the RC-4 in Germany, though in Cities there would probably someone calling the police ... and well, if someone feels threatened there's a chance they confiscate the knife. But the Izula is no problem at all (unless of course you get caught doing illegal stuff with it).

I had a package driver giving me a strange look for pulling out the Izula. But that was on my own property, and I was only opening the package ...

...He seemed like an impressionable guy. Hopefully, this is just the push he needs to dive head first into the knowledgeable side of the knife world and spend all of his money on a healthy new addiction.

I don't know...

Playing devil's advocate, aren't these the types you'd want as far away as possible from knives?

AMEN! I've said that more times than I can count but I'm not going to threadjack.

To the OP, I think you handled the situation very well considering the fact you entertained what he said rather than politely ignoring him like many of us have and would have in the same situation. I think you're both better from the experience. Great story, thanks for sharing!

One thing I would like to add to the conversation, these peeps that have their "ninja mall certified badass" knives are passionate about them, if uninformed. This is a good thing, because with the way the laws are going more and more PC, these people are going to be screaming right beside us if they start restricting knife carry, and start increasing the carry laws.

Conversely mrcoffee, are these the people we want standing next to us in a battle like that? More numbers are good, but they need to not be loudmouth idiots. This guy would do more harm in a town hall meeting than good. I'd rather stand alone than be backed by 500 of them. It's the same damage sat night specials have done to handguns.

I'll agree with that - education is best.

Until properly educated, there's no way anybody should be standing next to them in battle (or some similar, more mundane situations).

What about those package deals on QVC, you can get 200 knives for $300. I remember a few years ago the QVC sales guy showing off an Asian type sword tried to be cool, he was swinging the sword around and hit the table with the blade, to show how tough the steel was. The blade broke in half, flipped backwards towards him cutting his arm. I have seen repeats many times on Funny Video type shows, and its quite amusing if you watch it. Im sure he was scarred at the time, but if you watch it you would think also "what a boob"!

every one has to start some where.... and ignorance is every ones problem.... its when we think we are truely enlightend we will get our ass handed to us....

It takes time , and research , and understanding... and well to a point training and just plain getting your hands dirty... and most important. making mistakes and taking it gracefuly.

Its how you deal with some one under informed... and present your argument that counts... when you get holyier then thou then you will not get your message properly across... i think the OP handled it well... but remember ... you guys are hard core knife guys.... your part of a board , reading it often , posting about the subject. most people dont have that...

I try to educate as much as i can with what i know... but im always open to new ideas. and if i am wrong im willing to intake that new viewpoint/ information... being proved wrong hurts too but if you learn something from it ... take it with grace you will do better by yourself i feel. Im not as good as the RAT crew at the jungle , but in my area im sure i could show em a few tricks.... and every one does have something to teach you believe it or not. If i needed to survive in a city ... i would talk to a bum there...

I also had a stack of fancy hibbins when i was in high school... and cheapo gun show blades.... but well... i moved on ... and as i used my knives more and learned more i changed my preferances.... me and my brother kinda have the same deal and he carries a case and i perfer my multi tool/crkt... he likes AO's i dont like em. but i respect his choices because they come from what he does.... and what he finds neat ... i do the same....

I believe the right tool for the right job too... and while i have a multi tool... if i have to i keep plenty of tools in my truck... and will often grab that over using my fancy sog multi tool or gerber....

I never appreciated beer till i started home brewing... now i know my beers a lot better... but im still learning ... never stop learning...

Last time I checked the "sea of screaming idiots" usually gets what they want. I'll take the 500 and try to educate them later.

Amen brother.

Hey, at least the guy carries a knife. That's a big step above a lot of folks these days. I wonder how many of the guys on this forum started out like that poor, misinformed lad. If I knew the guy, I would have been tempted to give him my knife and tell him to keep it. That way he could find out what it's like to use a "real" knife, and would come away from the experience feeling good, instead of feeling like a chump.
Sadly, you have a very good point here. I wish more people would carry shitty knives. A lot better than no knife at all! I'm sure people who carry shitty knives can be made to see what consitutes a good quality knife. :)

It doesn't matter how dumb they are long as the can vote...

I didn't find it that funny.
Maybe I missed the joke. :D
Can't argue what might have been, D.

He was arguing that an OHO is the same as a switchblade/AO, even though we know it isn't. A professed "knife maker and collector" like he said he was, should have known that...should he not?

I will give him credit though. He did catch hold of some nice little, older model, Case knives that had a good patina. Even told me about a '72 Canoe I have--I don't know shit about aging a knife. Don't really care about it, either. I use them to chop shelter poles and gut/skin/process dead animals for crying out loud.

Nicely handled there, prob what I had done too, especially if I had known the guy.

Whoa! I didn't think it was that bad in Sweden. It's the same in Finland as well. The law states it's illegal to carry any "edged weapon" (Don't ya just hate that term? Especially since it basicly applies even to the smallest utility knives.) in public. But you can carry one if your job or something else requires it (construction workers, electricians etc would prob fit into this category).
I still carry at least one blade on me at all times, but I keep 'em sub 3-inch, or a multitool/SAK. 'Cuz if ya happen to get caught with one, never heard of happening unless you were doing something illegal, it's easier to justify it than an over 4 inch tactical folder.

I have a buddy that keeps going back to his gas station knives for some reason, for years I have given him much better knives than those dollar knives yet he always goes back to them. I ask to borrow his knife last time i saw him just to see what he was carrying, it was a "Damascus" gas station knife where the pattern was printed on the blade. Some people never learn.

As for people at the office asking to borrow my knife I keep a tiny SAK in my desk drawer for just such an occasion.

Yeah, ignorance... The guy at the desk in front of me likes to nag me about any knife being a weapon. That's like - me - "Tool". -him - "Weapon". - "Tool." - etc. He'd also love to see my knife being confiscated as an offensive weapon, since they're obviously highly dangerous and irresponsible objects.

Today - lo and behold - he wanted to skin an apple. So... Yes, he did ask. And I did hand my Spydie Lum Chinese folder over. He actually returned it clean and dry, I was surprised about that - so, I couldn't resisit: "Well Brandon, tool or weapon?" - always wanting to have the last say in everything, after a short hesitating he said "well for apples it's not ideal" and swiftly walked away.

Wanker. :D
