But let me tell you, my quality expectations are very high for this knife. $130 is a chunk of cash for a knife, it had better be well made or back to BM it goes.

Night,
It should be pretty tight. It will loosen up after a little use, so you want it to start out tight. You should have to squeeze it kind of hard to latch it when it's new. All three of my 42's were very tight right out of the box. The one I have actually worked with, has loosened up so I just have to squeeze it a little to latch it and it stays latched.

It finally came! It is almost perfect. The pin on the safe handle is set a little deep on the smooth side. The head sticks out a little further on the other side, but this does not affect the performance at all.

It was a problem with UPS that really slowed down the delivery. They shipped it to the wrong place and it sat there for a few days. When it finally got here, the box it was shipped in was BEAT!!! It looked like someone kicked it here from Florida.

The only thing I can't figure out is why "3 Day Shipping" means a shipping date of the 12th and a scheduled delivery date of the 19th.

I just purchased the standard 42 and mine is great. I purchased at my local Army/Navy store where I could inspect it before buying it.

Got mine from 1SKS and it appears to be of excellent quality. All washers are in place, the blade is sharp, the handles are nice and move freely. The latch is pretty well cast and and makes good contact whether open or closed, although it does show signs of hand fitting. I am well pleased.

I got mine about 2 weeks ago. It seems really nice so far. All the washers are there, holes drilled and counter-sunk properly. I did notice it was a little hard to latch both open or closed. I'm not exactly sure how tight it's supposed to be. I have a manila folder and a BM 239 to compare it to. The 239 is loose both open and closed(haven't gotten around to fixing it yet), which does me no good for comparing. And the manila folder is old, and I didn't buy it new, so I don't know how tight it was originally. Either way, I still like it. One more thing as far as quality goes, it didn't come very sharp, but I've come to expect that from them. It's kind of like: "We'll make a decend quality knife, you just have to sharpen it."

Well, after one week's worth of wait, I finally got my BM42 delivered by the man in the brown truck. Here's the quality overview:

1)Blade perfect (except for the BM dull edge)
2)a few scratches on the latch. makes the latch looked used or something.
3)2 of the smaller holes on the handles aren't perfectly circular
4)you know how the edge of the countersunk holes have a kind of bead blasted look? Well on 2 of these holes half of the circle is missing that bead blast appearance. Looks like they had to redrill to get the countersink right after they already put the bead blast on it or something. Also, 1 of these same holes is slightly deformed.
5)on one of the larger holes, there is a very small airbubble.
6)when i took it out of the box. the damn thing was pretty dirty, full of finger prints and stuff, as well as what looked like metal saw dust or something, had to clean it, no big deal, but that NEVER happens with a Microtech coming out of a box.

and of course that sheath is a POS.

but overall, once I cleaned it, it looked pretty good, and all those things I mentioned above are pretty small things. To be honest though, I was expecting the fit and finish to be perfect, I guess I'm too used to Microtech now. Has anyone gotten one that was PERFECT?

Oh, one question, there is lateral play in the handles, not too much though. I assume this is normal for balisongs even made by Benchmade? I just read a post that the old BM45's had even more play like that, that sounds pretty bad for the BM45 then... why don't they or can't they make balis with almost zero play?
