So how would you make this piece, with very little $ and no talent?

I'm interested in making something like this hammer:

but have no clue (except for filing forever) how to achieve it.
The only other idea I could come up with was grinding it, hence my coming to ask the experts here. So:
Is a bench grinder a viable option?
What kind of wheels (can you use cutting wheels or just abrasive with these things) would you use?
What kind of steel would you use?
How would you shape the inside of the "C"?
No answer too basic!
Thanks.

Bench grinder is not an option. You couldn't get the inside edges without bumping into the grinder.

What's the scale of this thing? And why do you call it a hammer?

If you scribe the lines correctly and have patience (and a steady hand), you'd be surprised what you can accomplish with a Dremel and assorted bits.:)

It is a black powder gun's hammer. I hope it is drawn (but not photographed by me) to size -- approx. 3 inch X 3 inch. The Dremel is a good idea! Any others?

Drill out the center of the circle,or cut out with a hacksaw and finish with a dremel or files.
Sorry about the talent,I don't have much and absolutly none to spare.:D

Good points.
You save time and wear on the bits if you can remove more metal before shaping.

waterjet...Might pm some of the ones on here that do it...

drill holes along the lines then cut from hole to hole with a bandsaw or a hacksaw

If you want to come over and use my shop you are more than welcome to. I'm over in Altoona. I'll see if I can get a scrap piece of D2 or A2 to use. Not the biggest shop, but I've got a bandsaw, drill press, files, and a 2x72 grinder that you can use. The band saw should be able to get most of the cutting done.

Thanks for all the replies so far and especially zaph1's very generous offer. Zaph1, could you contact me at blackcat9volt (at) yahoo.com? I'd be happy to cover material and wear-and-tear costs!
Thanks again.
