So, how's it going?

Obviously, I had to leave my cooking set up behind in the Adirondacks.

So I tried one of these,

I liked it well enough. A little high tech for me, but it worked nicely.

But I share the place with Boo Boo,

Apparently, Boo Boo liked it too,

But all was not lost!

I was walking the property one day, and stumbled upon this.

A remnant of turn of the century logging and/or railroad.

Once I acquired permission to retrieve it. I did some pruning,

I'm a little rusty with the Blue Nosed Ratchet, but it turned out decent for freehand work..

I almost took it all the way down to the cast iron, But I figure I can always cut it down later. I can't cut it back up.

A little digging, a little filling, a little leveling,

Some scavenging of some old junk parts off a Weber Grill at the transfer station and it started to come together.

An ash/spark catcher and a grill to keep the wood in with plenty of air flow.

There was an opening ceremony to make it official,

It wasn't totally free. I have $26.00 in landscape bricks,

And another $50.00 for a grill,

Feeling cocky after the pizza sucess, I had a go with yeast rolls,

On they go. it was a tad hot,

Covered, and baked,

Couple of the bottoms were a little darker than I would have liked, but life goes on.

Add a few eggs,

Flip,

And life is good!

Then, I maxed my credit limit out on one of these new fangled Carbon Steel Pans from Lodge,

It's not as much fun as teflon, because you don't get to consume all those petroleum products,

Plus nothing sticks, what fun is that?

And you can't scrape the finish off with your spatula,

But it makes a mean breakfast,

Sometimes I miss my old cook spot.

But this one has some advantages,

It's 360º and the cast iron throws off massive amounts of heat,

I don't own a television, but we had a super bowl party any way,
Who needs the high priced whiners?

Overall I'd say,
Life is pretty good, simple is the path forward, and beer is better than ever!

LV,

P.S.
Add the word work between every space in the last few posts, and you have my entire life since we last talked.

Chimera???????

Definition of chimera

1acapitalized : a fire-breathing she-monster in Greek mythology having a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail
b: an imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts

2: an illusion or fabrication of the mind especially : an unrealizable dream a fancy, a chimera in my brain, troubles me in my prayer — John Donne, His utopia was a chimera.

I find it hard to cook on a Chiminea

Even harder on a Chimera!

so the real question is where's that griddle top? :D that might work on your uh chimera :D

pro-tip: you cook INSIDE a true chimera ;) don't lose the juices that way...

looks good, and the woods are free of that "iron root"

I've seen and used clay Chimeras,

But I tend to get a tad rambunctious with wood at times.

I wanted something a little tougher that I could still cook on.

There is actually more "Iron Root" out there.
Ineed to see what else I can salvage and if it's worth all the effort.

Need to see it in the minds eye, before I chase it. And my mind is going blind.

i have the "medium sized self standing blackstone. it's all i need for meals for a week, or definitely feed 2-3 people in one go... also, it can fold and go. i'd definitely also just wheel it inside for certain storms or a vacation. our bears are not as bold, but the state has 7500 of them.

the FOUR burner one, in stainless, is pretty fabulous though, and i'd consider that down the road as my sole cooking arrangement, should it come to that :D

cast iron... got the pizza platter for the big green egg. but gah, the off the shelf lodge stuff may have to do, as anything "decent" like old school, is $$$$ around here. the dealers are a cancer in that regard. the new carbon fiber stuff looks sweet though. basically, they went the way of the wok :)
