So I bought another Strider....

I know in my other thread I bagged on my perceived value of the SNG I bought, but carrying and using it the last two weeks, I have grown to really like the design. But I generally like bigger knives to EDC. I am 6'5" and weigh about 240. So I started looking at pics and vids of the SMF and it really did not seem that much bigger....the specs say so, but side by side?

While the knife was in route, I went to a knife shop near me and they had a few Striders that they got as trades. The only SMF they had was a SMF GG, and that looked large. I was wondering how the lego would be like when I got it.

So I got it today and it is a beast. It kinda dwarfs the SNG when held....but is very comfortable. I carried it all day and did not really notice it in my pocket. But don't get me wrong, the SnG carries better.

Anyhow, here are the pics of both. (The SMF does not look much bigger eh?)

I picked up a Microtech DOC as a kind of Strider fix attempt. It's similar in dimension to the SMF. I was blown away by how big that knife really is. So much handle!

I like the DOC but I also have a couple of SNGs, the DOC for me is more the size of the SMF

Congratulations on the SMF, I switch between the two. No doubt the SMF is a beast. Enjoy it!!!!

I have been a fan of Strider folders, in general, for a long time. Nice knives for heavy-duty work.

Screwdriver - so you came to value your Strider more once you started carrying and using it? That's good. When I read the other thread I was hoping you would use it and let us know what you thought.

Well, here is the deal.....One of the knives I compared it to, I still feel there is F&F and mechanical precision that warrants its cost. But what brings that knife down for me is....and I'll be honest...I probably will not use. It is too nice, if that makes since. In fact, I carried a few times and I was constantly aware it was on me; the Strider I just put in my pocket and forgot it was there.....The Striders, even the price I paid will be carried and used. I am not saying one is better then the other, but the knife that is used warrants it price. IMHO.

Even the two Striders will be fighting for pocket time. If I end up liking one over the other, the one not being used will be sold. I am really not a collector. In fact I have been listing knives I bought on a whim, and did not use. Let someone else enjoy them.

To others reading this, please do not turn this into a what is better thread.....;)

Oh, it's definitely SMF sized. Where that got me on the SnG is that I'm finding myself wanting a smaller version of the frame.

...and a pocket clip that doesn't feel like it was designed to kill me.

Nice to see you grab another Strider folder so soon after a lackluster first glance. My black stonewash cc SnG is my favorite knife. Its my EDC and a user. I also would like to handle a SMF. So many knives to get.:p

Perfectly good explanation to me. That's exactly what I do. I only keep what I use. I'm glad you like your new Strider. They really are great knives.

Smf > doc imho

Certainly, I would trust a full titanium lockside with a lot more physical stress than I would trust what amounts to a liner lock screwed on to a handle scale.

All the same, I'm presently debating as to whether I want to start carrying the DOC I picked up or not. It really is a fun knife, but maybe a bit impractical and less beefy than I'd really want a knife that large to be. It's like having a panzer tank that has a plastic seal on the main barrel. Yeah, I'm sure it'll work for a while, but...

The screws are through the G10 scale and into inserts in the titanium lock side. G10 is not plastic and is very tough. Look at what Cold Steel has done with the American Lawman and it has two slabs of linerless G10.

Very close...

Thank you for that pic, Jill. For some reason, that particular angle just gave me a jolt of perspective about what it would be like to handle an SMF as compared to a DOC. Specifically, I think the angle put my head into approaching/reaching for the knife, and how the hand comes into position after opening via the thumb oval instead of firing the DOC's flipper. It seems that the natural habit with the SMF would be to approach the closed knife higher, roll it in hand while opening, and have a high hold at the point where the blade has just completed opening.

In other words, it looks like it would kind of walk the hand right into the choil, so a typical grip would leave all of that butt sticking out.

Having excess handle bugged me enough to not buy a ZT 0560, but the SMF has it while inviting control by choking up.

Hmmm...

I didn't like the Lego SMF I had. It was a pain in the pocket. The CC SMF on the other hand was perfect. I'd love to pick up a GG SnG

I love my SMF Lego, I personally find it to be quite a large knife for the weight. I also have no problem with the Lego design, though I would like to get a DGG SMF in the future. Maybe a DOC as well.

Glad to see you started liking your Striders.
