If you guys are part of some of the FB groups, y'all might have seen this. I didn't intentionally break this knife. I was just thumping on it for fun since I figured if a folder can take this kind of abuse, it'll be a Cold Steel, but it broke way earlier than I had thought. You can tell how much wood got through in the picture. The board the blade is laying on is the block of wood that I was trying to baton through. I did grind down the serrations and the wood is pine. The mallet is made of plywood and pine. When the blade broke, the spine was parallel to the ground. Triad Lock is awesome without a doubt. It's a very well designed lock, but the blade I'm not so sure. I've heard people being able to baton with triad lock knives and they make it out so I wanted to see for myself. I was a little disappointed, but Cold Steel did replace my knife which is awesome. Now, I'm completely aware that this is knife abuse. I know that you don't baton folders. I'm not saying that it's the knife's fault for break, but I am saying that I expected better.

That's abuse pure and simple. Such acts should not be encouraged.

You can still break a perfectly good blade and knife if you do it wrong !!! I would never recommend batoning a folder !

CTS XHP is basically stainless D2. D2 has been known to snap while being batoned. AUS8A would have had more flex to it, and could deal with abuse better than CTS XHP.

Regardless of who the knife was made by-any CTS XHP made blade, of similar thickness, properly hardened, would have failed the exact same way-even a fixed blade.

Wow. How did you grind the serrations off? Power tool? If you did that with a grinder and didn't cool the blade properly you may have ruined the temper. Kudos to CS for replacing the knife.

Unrealistic expectations, lets be real here, you were hitting the THIN hollow ground blade through solid wood with a giant wooden mallet.

I for one think Cold Steel really had no option but to replace the knife after watching some of their videos and the abuse they put their knives through. I mean what good is a strong lock if the business end can't handle the abuse?

Belt sander. One pass one dip. Don't think it'll heat up that fast especially when the sander is at 20% speed.

Exactly why I thumped on it.

I see the problem. You were using Thor's hammer to baton. Nothing can stand up to that.;)

Also, they make that knife in plain edge-why buy a serrated edge if you were just going to grind them off?

Yeah, but if Cold Steel breaks a knife, it's no biggie, they have plenty more. I'm not sure I would have tried this without knowing it'd be covered, and the fact that they did speaks highly of the company. $70 is, after all, $70, and they could have easily declined replacement, considering the circumstances.
